Exhaust fumes in the cabin

Post by peter.vw »

Exhaust fumes in the cabin. After long run to Kent Wednesday had problems breathing and soar throat but did not realize was being gassed, was not till I got out of the car at the end of my journey that I could smell diesel exhaust fumes on my clothes and hands.
The only other untoward thing I noticed earlier this week was when stopped at a set of lights blue smoke in the head lights and a strong smell in the car as the DPF was in a regenerating cycle but thought there was oil on the exhaust burning off.
Took a day to get over feeling sick and getting breathing back to normal so today took the car to the dealer, they checked it out but can not find were the leak is but they can smell exhaust in the engine bay, they think that the exhaust manifold, turbo and exhaust system will have to come off so as to find the leak.
The air intake for the heater sits above the manifold so when the fan is on any fumes from the engine bay are sucked in.
Hope I am the only one to experience this, the workshop foreman says he never seen it before unless someone out there knows different.
If i want a courtesy car will have to wait for work to be done in april and it will cost £11.50 per day or i have to stand a £1000 access for insurance.

I think I would be causing a very BIG fuss over this one. If they agree there is something wrong they should be looking at straight away. Courtesy car should be free with a realistic excess of £400 ish.

Tell them you are going to the loal paper (then national) with the headline gassed by VW Scirocco......I could think of much worse if you think about the nation in which VW's originate!!!

But in all seriousness, I'm shocked they have the nerve to charge for a courtesy car. Its not like it annoying noise its actually bad for your health..

Ring VW CS asap and report the fault to them, they will arrange a hire car for you and get your car booked in with the dealer for you!!!

Or ring VW assistance and tell them you are not willing to drive the car for your health's sake, thy will arrange for it to be owed to your dealer and sort a hire car out for you!!

Shame on your dealer!!

Hi I have in fact gone to another dealer today they did not even look at the car and said they could not do anything till April because there are no courtesy cars available from VW till then, my fist dealer did sagest taking the car home and ringing VW assist saying the car was un drivable. I am booked in for Monday week but no car. Till then will have to drive with the windows open and not use the heater

hi,i had same problem wit fumes, not as bad as yours.turned out it was a leak on some fuel return pipe under turbo, thats what i was told.same prob wit hire car unavailable, but i fought wit vw assist.organised my own hire car&billed vw for it,i run a business&cannot operate without car.they paid for it,I WAS NOT SETTLING FOR ANY BULLSHIT FROM THEM! stand your ground&demand it or return car on dangerous problem, tell them your going to publicise it.car is in for wiper replacement&rear strut bolts in may,1st service.rear boot rattle has to be sorted also, blemish on 18'' alloy also,i'm demanding new wheel,if all not sorted car stays there, its just not good enough on 33500euro car.far too many problems wit the scirocco in my opinion.

Car back from dealer and like Brendan I had the EGR pipe replaced, something for all you TDI owners to watch out for.
Must say cant praise the guy (Giles) high enough that I booked the car in with, he had the car in the workshop when I first took the car in and also kept me posted over the last two days that the work took. Well done Colbornes Hersham.
Goes to prove it’s the staff that makes a good company work well.
They also had a go at turning on the turn lights but alas did not succeed as this can only be done if you have Xeons.

Thanks for following this thread up. I haven't had a problem myself but I'll keep a watch for it.

If the DPF is in regen mode when i'm stuck at lights, I can smell it, but it's not bad - it just seems to be an ambient smell from outside that is partially brought in with the cabin air intake, I don't feel like i'm being gassed by it. The car behind me is likely to be getting a larger dose than I am.

Hi you can check it out by sitting on your drive after a run with the heater on if you smell exhaust then it maybe leaking you should not smell what’s coming out the back.
I did get smoke from under the bonnet in regen,
Try popping the bonnet when the engine is running if you can smell exhaust fumes over the turbo the chances are it leaking

I'm a bit concerned that this is happening with mine, but I don't know if I'm just talking myself in to it because I've already read this post.

Definitely feel a bit woozy after driving to a job this morning, but then I'm also on antibiotics at the moment which tend to mess me up a bit. Although maybe I've had this mystery cough for three weeks in the first place because my car is slowly killing me?!

Smell in the cabin is very faint, unless it's doing the DPF regen, which seems to happen quite a lot. The ticking from the transmission that I've mentioned elsewhere could perhaps suggest a problem with the EGR?

Hi I spent weeks wondering what was happening; mine started in November and have just worked it out. If you suspect yours is leaking you will smell exhaust fumes when you open the bonnet and put your nose over the turbo even on tick over.
You can isolate your self from it by putting the heater into recalculate, try that for a couple of days if think it is leaking take it to your dealer.
This complaint is logged with VW its not common but its a recurring fault
