Merlin cloth seats

Post by Bigjack »

Has anyone had any problem with Merlin cloth seats. I have just taken my Roc to the dealers as the cloth on the drivers seat has come away from plastic surround on the handle at top of sear which allows the seat to tilt and move forward. The guy at the dealers said that the fabric has either come away from its retainer or cloth has split either way the seat needs to be completely stripped. He has ordered a new covering just in case it needs renewing and also the right side of the seat is worn where I suppose my bum brushes against it when I get in and out.
I just wondered if anyone had any problems with the Merlin cloth or is my bum too big and no I'm not going to send a photo in !!!! :eyepop:

Darn, and we were hopping for that shoot.
Anyway doesn't speak for the quality of a VW ...normaly they have high standards ... maybe they need to rethink about that factory in Portugal. ;)

Yes Bigjack I've got this exact same problem. Took it to the dealers a few months back and they told me they stripped the seat and re-covered it - It's now doing exactly the same thing! so they obviously just pushed it back under the plastic bit. Unfortunately I cant drive for a few months so not much I can do at the moment but I will be back to the dealers asap to get them to re-do it PROPERLY!

Obviously an ongoing issue then if it's not just me!

Saw this happen on a brand new Scirocco at GTi International last June. About 1 hour after opening the Scirocco up for peeps to sit in on the first day, the whole top outer corner (about 6 inches) had the fabric ripped open. In this case, I don't know if it had been deliberately cut. Wasn't impressed.

Took the Roc to the dealers today and seat was repaired apparently the material had come away from its retainer, this was replaced and its ok now.
Thanks for all the replies and input.

Sounds like leather a sensible option! Nearly avoided it as generally prefer cloth........ Normal conversation re resale value with dealer and just ticked box.
Thoughts - possible seats over foamed for the cloth as most were expected to be leather and cloth can't handle it??

I had this issue with the driver seat, the dealer replaced the seat cover and the complete handle assembly. There is a little set of rearward facing teeth in the handle assembly that the cloth is stretched over. The material was slightly torn hence the new cover to get some fresh material and new handle assembly to get a new set of teeth :) So far OK I found you can prise the handle assembly cover off and pull the material back onto the teeth if required. So far I haven't had to do this. The whole thing looks a bit crude
