Controlling iPod from steering wheel?

Post by ka1875 »

Got my Roc yesterday and absolutely f-ing love it.

However, it is rather cumbersome (not to mention dangerous, when on the move!) to navigate the iPod via the touchscreen. Is there any way of doing anything other than track up/down from the steering wheel?

Cheers.

Yes. Just use the up and down arrows on the steering wheel to move forward or back a track.

I believe ka1875 is aware of that, I think what he means is can you select albums or artists using the steering wheel buttons.
As far as I know you can only use the buttons to move between tracks on an album which you have already selected from the touch screen.

Yep prev/next and volume is all you can change.

I suspect it's partly due to iPod integration being fairly new in cars. They've started off by coding in the basics. Give it a couple of years and you'll probably have more control within the MFD on the dash. Then again maybe part of it is that they don't want too much to distract the driver. Do you want people scrolling through artists and albums instead of watching the road :)

Sorry. I misread the original post!

In that case the answer is no. Same with any other source. You can only skip forward and back from the steering wheel.

With all that in mind ... I keep wondering what is the point of having exactly the same limited degree of control repeated using the MFD buttons (in Audio mode) on the other side of the steering wheel.
Can't see the sense.

...and I can't see what you mean. The same limited degree of control as what? The head unit? How is it limited? What do you mean exactly? Speak up man! :D

Right ED, for those for whom English is a second language  ... and bearing in mind I'm referring to a MY2010 model which has some differences in the buttons on earlier models .....
Using the audio buttons on the LHS of the steering wheel you can move up and down thru the tracks, but not change folders or albums etc.
Using the MFD buttons on the RHS of the steering wheel you can select Audio mode on the MFD display (still with me ED ?) and within that display, using the buttons on the RHS, you can again move up and down thru the track list, but nothing else.

So what is the point in having that function on the MFD ?

Yes, I was wondering about that too. Surely it wouldn't be impossible to remap the MFD buttons to go back to folders/input etc? Would make much more sense and be far safer than fiddling with the (somewhat sluggish) touch-screen whilst driving!

Ah right. I see now. I have a MY2009 car so don't have that on my steering wheel. Yes, that is a bit strange. Almost as if they don't know what to do with the extra buttons. Most likely has something to do with the steering wheel being used in other cars and markets so the buttons will be programmed differently depending on the applications/options available in the vehicle it's in.

Not a steering wheel moan, but it annoys me that you can't scroll up and down the track listing on the head unit using the bottom right hand button. It would have been easy to make that work like the click wheel on an iPod, so you can scroll by turning left and right and select by pushing the button. Scrolling through lists using the touch screen is a nightmare.
