Screen wash fluid

Post by jc74 »

After having the car only 6 months (without day to day usage), the screen wash has ran out. This is the first time it's happened for ages, most car in the past always had the screen wash topped up at the next service, which implies it's always lasted 1-2 years.
I blame that on the wiper smear, which causes me to use the wash/wipe a lot more!
Few things which may or may not be useful for people:-
- From empty to full is about 4 litres. Useful to know since most 1 litre washer fluid recommend 1:4 mixture fopr winter, so I ended up doing a 1:3 mixture - no big deal.
- I tried turning the low fluid washer sensor with VAGCOM to see if we had one but it's simply disabled. Anyway, couldn't get it working so assume that there actually isn't one.

Yeah it's a big tank (compared to my old car). Useful to know it's 4 litres. Thanks

I think the sensor is part of the winter pack so if you don't have that pack you're probably missing anything to turn on anyway.

My car has Winter pack and does indeed have a low fluid warning light.

FWIW, I remember a thread on the MKV gti forum about the "fan" spray failing/blocking and VW attributed this to using non VW screen wash. Cannot see how this is the case but worth remembering. "Yes Mr Service department, only ever been fed a diet of VW screen wash"
Taken delivery : Silver, DSG, NAV, Black Leather, Park Sensors, Winter pack.

Mods: Full Milltek, KW lowering springs,Wheel Spacers, Remapped to 258BHP, 405Nm

Thing is, VW screenwash is pretty decent. Way better than the cheapo halfords type crap, and not expensive when you buy it in bulk.

Oops, that's exactly what I filled up with. It was lying around the home (and probably many years old - this stuff doesn't go off?). Hope the jets don't clog up

I did noticed though that when pouring it in, there's a sieve type filter so, I think they've done something to stop bits getting in...

Il get my mate to bring me some VW stuff home when I need it. You may find it uses more though than your used to for the head light washers. I took the fuse out for mine! I don't want screenwash spraying over the front of my car!

The headlight washers arent bad, they only operate if the dip or main beam is on also they only operate every fifth time time you use the windscreen washers, If my screens dirty and needs a squirt in the daytime, if the lights are on through the auto sensor, I drop onto sidelights and wash the screen then put the switch back to auto after, saves getting scoosh up your bonnet, and before someone says, yes I do realise this is only an option in daylight!
