Long story short, had a rattle in my engine which turned out to be water pump bearing loose and rattling around. Changed that, rattle disappeared but the engine starts juddering like hell and then EML comes on. Took it back to mechanic, fault is camshaft/crankshaft correlation error - timing chain stretched - kinda to be expected at 100k+ miles so I wasn't too shocked.
Had timing system replaced, chain/pulleys/tensioner/guides - the lot.
Car purrs like a dream when driving now - no noticeable issues as long as my foot's on the accelerator... but when it's not, it idles like crap Feels almost like it's having little spasms, you can feel it in your seat. Rev counter barely moves so revs aren't jumping although there was one instance it nearly stalled itself at lights.
Sometimes you can hear a very tiny 'puttputt' sound from the exhaust when it does it, if you bend down near the rear of the car.
Changed spark plugs, tested all the coil packs and one was a bit iffy so we replaced that one, the rest were fine. Also replaced the battery because mine was showing FAIL consistently when tested.
The most annoying part? No fault codes, no lights, no anything - just the irritating intermittent vibration/judder every 5-10 secs or so, and only at idle. The second my foot's on the accelerator it's perfect lol.
Doing a smoke test this weekend because I figured a leak somewhere could cause this too.
Anyone had similar experience? What do I look at as priority? IAC? Throttle body? Carbon deposits? Something else? Forgive me I'm not a massively mechanically minded person but both me and my mechanic are a bit stumped where to start
I'm getting a bit hesitant toward spending money for it to not fix the problem as I recently lost my job (company shut down) so this is terrible timing for car trouble!!!
Appreciate the help
TL;DR: Rocco 1.4 TSI CAXA, 2011 - Car idling a bit rough (barely any rev fluctuation) but drives fine, not spark plugs, unlikely to be coils, not battery and gonna do smoke test soon. If anyone has other ideas please lemme know.
My roc's idle is lumpy?! 1.4 TSI
