RNS 510 new Firmware - SDHC, Voice Control!

Post by jc74 »

Have been trawling through various forums and it seems that a newer firmware is available for the RNS 510 unit!
Until recently, the newest was 1100. It is not version 2660.
I've downloaded the image (took all evening!), burnt it to CD an will try it tomorrow and will post an update.
The best feature is that it should allow updating without having to reload all the maps and music!

Here's a list of the new features...

- Voice Control (requires microphone – see Volkswagen RNS 510 Microphone Connection for voice control)
- Speed Limit Display
- Stability Improvements
- Faster Startup
- Display OPS and RVC at the same time
- SDHC 32 GB Support (HW04 and above)
- Display Off on extras tab
- Climatronic control if approriate climatronic fitted
- Clock display if RNS 510 swtiched off
- Excluded roads (under route options)
- GPS coordinates entry
- Additional adjustments for video
- Larger RVC screen with transparent menus at the side

More details and firmware can be downloaded from link here:-

Upgraded mine on thursday. I had only SW revision 900 on my version b. Got to say it adds a few nice estras, including a better looking OPS display with the area greyed out instead of plain orange (well on my sportline theme).

If anyone is doing it, burn it with magiciso on MOde2/XA and NOT on MOde 1, as it will fail the installation. found it out with trial ad error. Just need to buy a microphone now and then ill activate the voice control via vagcom.

Quick update.
I burnted the image to a CDR using Nero, at 4x spreed, other settings at default.
As per original instructions on site, unlocked the car, pressed the stereo on button without putting the key in. Pressed eject, Info and setup buttons at same time, which rebooted the system. Immediately put CDR into drive straight after pressing the buttons.
Followed the prompts and ok at the right points. Took roughly an hour to update. During which time I left the car unlocked (was worried in case locking it caused the radio to switch off after 10 minutes (like normally).

Ok, my views...
- System starts up much quicker, radio is working almost instantly, media controls available a bit quicker.
- I tried a 4Gb SD card (non-SDHC) and it still didn't work :(.
- UPDATE: Borrowed a 4Gb SDHC card and that works!!!
- The speed limit display is pretty cool. It shows the speed limit in the top right corner whilst in map view - VERY useful around here, with millions of cameras and different speed limits everywhere...

In my case, no issues at all that I've noticed yet. Overall, everything seems to be an improvement.
Not tried the voice control though, since I don't have bluetooth, and thus no mic fitted.

You can just buy a mic and plug it directly into the RNS unit (pins 1 & 7). No need for the bluetooth to have the voice control...

If they even aware of it... would be interested to know what they tell you. I bet its along teh lines of "sorry sir, the flux capacitor has to be at least a 2009 model"

My car is scheduled to be built this week (I soooooooo can't wait for it). I wonder if it will be delivered with the latest firmware on the RNS510? My guess is probably not, I bet there is a pile of head units sitting in the factory with the previous firmware version.

Jim
Car ordered 14 June 2009. Confirmed build week 36, slipped to build week 37. Deliver3 October.

VW appear to be quite lean - not much stock - so you may have a chance of the update!

Just finished updating. After a quick scan through the menus for the new things I can find all of them but one - Voice Control!! I've got the Premium bluetooth phone kit and can control that with voice but I don't see the 'Voice Control' option in the setup menu - http://www.my-gti.com/wp-content/upload ... ures_8.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I might need to try a few other things but has anyone here got it to work on their Scirocco?

This seems to explain it all:

Looks like it requires a bit of re-wiring :(

Download all four and then extract the first one and all four parts will extract to one combined file. Use WinRAR to do it.

???
thats soo weird?
anyways i guess i must have got it to work my accident as i've just finished loading it up and it seems to work now... :D

cant see any real improvements tbh
i don't like the big grey area behind the picture of the cars rear on the reverse parking screen. also it appears to be a LOT less sensitive i dunno if thats a good thing or a bad thing...

how you get voice control to work then?
i have a mic as i have premium bluetooth
