Head Unit upgrade to DAB a lazy way

Post by oayche »

Hi all

I'm a complete noob in vehicle mods, so I followed all the info I've found in the forums to upgrade my 2010 Scirocco RCD 510 FM head unit to an Android unit with DAB+.

I bought a 1K8035552F aerial amplifier to replace the current one under the rear right window. Getting the side panel off is a pain as it is, so I was wondering whether I can get away without having to thread a new DAB wire to the head unit, by using the existing FM wire instead and plugging it into the DAB port on the amplifier? I'm not bothered about having FM/AM

Cheers

The various coax cables, DAB, phone aerial, GPS, FM all have colour coded FAKRA sockets. DAB is blue. They all appear to have different "keys" so you can only plug the blue cable into the right blue socket.

So you won't be able to plug the FM cable into DAB socket without some tomfoolery. From pictures of DAB FAKRA plugs on ebay it appears that a minutes trimming with a modelling knife will make your FAKRA plugs universal and allow you to do what you want to do. But I've not done it myself so can't be certain.
