Slight creak from back end

Post by maisbitt »

Has anyone got a creak coming from the back of their car when they pull away gently/smoothly from a standstill? Mine does, i'd guess its the tailgate or rear suspension, but it's with the dealers right now being looked at.

I also get a single crack/groan from my nearside front wheel when I start to reverse around a corner at full lock left (reversing onto my driveway) - could be a dodgy steering rack, my old Golf MK5 did the same thing and had the steering rack replaced.

I'll post the outcome incase anyone else has these minor issues. Also going to take another look at the smeary wipers (3rd set on now).

Yes I definitely get the creaking from the rear suspension. Especially doing a hill start or 3 point turn.
For the first thousand miles it was really quite bad. I live in a cul-de-sac of terraced houses and when I come home at night I turn the car round and park it outside my house.
I was noticing that if I was doing my 3 point turn maneuver late at night I used to see the neighbors curtains twitch as they looked out to see what that loud creaking noise was.
After about a thousand miles though I took the car on a couple long hard motorway runs and that seemed to blow some cobwebs out of the system as the creaking definitely lessened in intensity by maybe a half after that.
A few weeks ago I had my car back to the dealers for the wipers and I got them to check the rear suspension too.
They told me that everything checked out okay and that although they recognized that the car did creek it was within acceptable limits.
I don't think they'd have said that though if they'd heard it in that first thousand. I kind of wish I'd brought it into them earlier as I'm sure they'd have been forced to do something more that just give it a visual check.
Anyway, as I said it still creaks but not as bad. When I posted a similar question to yours recently a few people commented that their Rocs didn't creak at all.
I find it a bit annoying as I don't think a new car should creak like that.
In the next few weeks I'm planning on getting the car lowered with some eibach springs and when I find someone reputable to fit them I will ask their opinion on the creaking.
I'm pleased to say that I'm not getting the crack/groan from the front wheel though.

Keep us updated with your dealers diagnosis. I'll be interested to hear what they say.

Maisbitt...mine had the same prob. Took it to the dealer on Scotswood Road and they fixed it...took them a day and a trip out with the mechanic to point out the noise. They tightened the boot lock and refitted some of the boot interior. They were really helpful. So far, no noise! Hope this helps.

Acceptable limits ?? Did they measure this with a creakometer or something. :fall:

Yes I know. "Acceptable limits"...the dealer quoted me that twice on the same visit. The liter of oil my car used in that first 1000 miles was apparently within acceptable limits too.
My noise is definitely the suspension or chassis creaking. When I lift my foot off the brake on a hill it's a deep metallic groan from low down in the car body towards the rear as the car pulls away. I've heard this sort of groan in cars before but never a brand new one. It's nothing to do with the boot though. That's sweet as a nut on mine.
The only problems I've had with the car are the wipers and this groan/creak.
I suppose the creak is now within my "acceptable limits" as it doesn't bother me enough to bring it back to the dealers just for that. Not since the creaking decreased to it's current level anyway. But I will get that second opinion when I get the springs fitted.
The wipers on the other hand are another story. I'm phoning the dealers today to get them to have another go at sorting them out as the smear is worse than ever.
I'm going to ask them about these modified wipers that Evil Derboy says are now available. Info from VW technical at Milton Keynes apparently.

Well, they pulled the striker nipples in a few notches on the boot, so the bootlid is more tightly held against it's rubber seals now, its probably cut down the number of creaks by 2/3. but hasn't totally eliminated it.

No more news on the wipers, my dealer is unaware of any VW announced engineering/technical updates or modifications - I made sure they registered the complaint that they're still smearing though, so that in a few thousand miles, if I go back, they won't just be able to say "fair wear and tear".

Ditto. Neither my dealer or VW Technical at MK whom I spoke to after have heard of any modified wipers for the Roc.
Mine is booked in for next Weds. for the wipers. I'll make sure I register a complaint too.
Failing a cure on Wednesday though I think my next move will be to splash out some more money on a set of Bosch wipers or the best ones I can find to see if they make any difference at all.

It's not the hill start assist thingy is it ? With the DSG if you are on a hill it holds the car on the brakes for a few seconds until you pull away.

No not with mine. That works as it should. It's just the rear suspension/chassis groaning under the load starting off on a hill.
It does when I do a 3 point turn on an average flat road, the only slope involved there is when the rear wheels are in the dip next to the curb which is caused by the natural camber of the road. It creaks as the rear wheels drive out of the gutter/dip. Hill Hold function doesn't come into use there.
