Buying a Scirocco GT 2.0 TSI 2009-04?

This is my first post on this forum

Im looking at buying a 2 owner Scirocco 2.0 TSI GT 2009-04 (200BHP) that has done about 120.000km. Oweners where an optician that used it as a company car 2009-2012 driving about 80.000km, the next owner is an middle aged women driving the next 40.000km from 2012-present. The cas has been serviced regularly with long life oil (since 2012 that means every 12.000km the last 7 years). As far as i can tell the car is in perfect condition regarding interior and exterior, i had nothing to complain about. The cam chain has never been replaced with is a concern to me, i think that i would like to have it replaced for peace of mind but what do you think?

I have not driven the car yet but will be able to do that in a couple of weeks.

Im looking for feedback/thoughts/concerns about this car, does it sound like a good purchace? Im most concerned about reliability, can i trust the engine? The owner asks an equivalent of about 9000GBP for the car including a set of alloy winter tires.

I have a 2009 from mid summer (I think July or Augustus) and that has the updated gauges and steering wheel, also 2.0 TSI.


I've had it from 65k km's, now it's at 76k. I've had the inlet manifold fail on me (820€ at VW) and a DSG service + oil. That's all, don't go to VW though they will rip you off. I found a new inlet manifold for €200-300 on the internet (trusted site) and an indie would probably fit it for like 100€ or something.


But yeah the updated chain tensioner and a new chain is also on my todo list. Hopefully still this year

Its fine . I am currently driving on B summer tyres (front are worn) and haven't had any sketchy moments. Only thing it does it it has terrible wheel spin in the wet. But obv I don't push it since hard right now due to the tyres (will get new ones also later)

Winter in your place might not include snow? =) This car includes studded winter tires and thats a given here in Sweden due to a few weeks of snow and ice in the winter =)

Have you experienced frozen windows and how do you avoid it? =)

Do you know if VW does any kind of goodwill on changing the chain and tensioner on old full serviced cars like this?

I'm from Belgium. There was snow a week ago and before that as well. Normally I wouldn't try out how it handles in the snow but I needed to go somewhere so I thought fuck it. The wheel spin was crazy even with 40% throttle the fronts did not get any traction (but that's like I said that i have worn B class summer tyres on the front). The winters are not harsh here like they would in Sweden. The snow was maybe max like 3-5 cm's and on the most places, it was full of salt.

Frozen windows idk it's stored in a garage haha, since I got it two years ago it never slept outdoors

Try winding down the windows and applying a good smear of 'Gummi Pflege' on the rubber seals at the top and bottom (where the glass rises from and slides into). This has worked a treat for me, in the recent temperatures of -1 to -6.

Ref frozen windows, similar to Tom, I just periodically use some silicone lubricant (Halfords) along the upper edges of the glass and inside the rubber seals in the bodywork and this winter I've not had the windows stick once despite some -6C to -8C nights and even freezing rain.

The one thing you do have to watch in freezing weather are the extremely fragile wiper blades. They only need to stick a tiny bit in ice and the rubber will separate. The Scirocco is the worst car I have ever had for wrecking wipers like that.

Haha, this car sounds like a fantastic winter driver! The scirocco is the least practical car i have ever been interested in but im so in love with the looks of it that i cant really bother.. Thanks for the tips for making the winter less of a pain with it!

My biggest concern at the moment is that the car is to old for engine damage insurance and still costs me 9000GBP, a wreced engine on this car would be 50% of the entire value. Is this a valid concern even after replacing the chain+tensioner+guides or can i expect the new parts to last the cars lifetime or do they still have problems with the updated tensioners going wrong after a few 10k kilometers?

Another question, does this engien sound healthy?:
