What MPG are you 140 owners getting ?

Post by Shewie »

As above really ...

I've got the option of the 140 Tdi or the 2.0 Tsi at work, having thrashed a mk5 Gti for the last 3 years I'm toying with a few more miles in exchange for a less of a buzz. Am I mad ?

I think a seriously consistent 55mpg might swing it although I've been averaging a pleasing 39 this week in the demo 2.0 Tsi. That's a 60 mile commute on the M62 with about 10 miles of 50mph average cameras there and back.

I suppose that's one way of looking at it :)

You'll never get 55......

I manage 45 - 50 depending on what type of drive it is.

Motorways at 70 (Well as close to 70 as I can force myself) return 50 or thereabuts]

Anything else and the right foot takes over and it's 45 at best.

I run a standard 140 TDi (for now)

40 - 45 per average tank full. Drive about 100 miles a day but do have a heavy foot :) The addition of average speed cameras on half my M1 drive has upped it to closer to the 50 mark for the time being though.

I got an indicated of about 51mpg average over the first 4000 miles of driving - this is for mixed driving conditions with probably 75% motorway miles. I believe actual mpg is about 10% lower than this (the onboard computer it seems, is generous on calculating mpg), so the figures the other guys have quoted here are probably reasonable. I usually get about 560 miles out of a tankful - but this is not scientific just based on resetting the trip counter at fill up time.
On Motorways the indicated mpg is usually 56 -58 mpg - i don't drive like a saint either. In fact I don't drive like a saint at all - I am sure if you never booted it you could easily get 60mpg but if you are buying this car you can't help putting your foot down sometimes!

I get an indicated average 48mpg if the aircon is blasting, or 51mpg without, with shortish journeys on mixed roads.

Do a bit of constant 80mph motorway journeys and i'm up to about 57mpg for the trip.

The computer is generous to the tune of 8-11% over calculated actual (assuming that the computer measure of a mile is accurate), so if the computer says you got 55mpg for the journey, it is more like 50mpg.

All my previous trip computer equipped VWs have had a similar discrepancy between indicated and actual mpg, so comparing indicated mpg on a Scirocco vs indicated mpg on a MK5 Golf/Passat, etc gives you a true comparison.

There seems very little penalty for using the aircon on the Scirocco, and even though my car now has only 2300 miles on it, it's opened up considerably from when it was brand new, I assume it'll get even better up to 15000 miles.

Its a 55 litre tank and its about £1.00 a litre at the moment. So its usually just over 50 notes at the moment.

No I don't think the supermarket vs branded fuel debate tosh. I personally never use supermarket diesel. I always use branded (BT, shell, texaco) and every 3 or 4 tanks I put in a tank of ultimate or the equivalent.
I used to use supermarket diesel in my old car (a focus tdci) and there was a definite performance loss using the cheaper supermarket brands. So, I just don't use it in the roc.
I figure the better detergents in the 'premium' brand diesels will keep my engine that much sweeter in the long-run too.

Best 'indicated' run was 61mpg worst was 45mpg. I believe my readout is also about 10% optimistic so actual mpg will be nearer 40 - 55. Engine will still be a tad tight though at 1100 miles. All journeys done with aircon on. Just for the hell of it I did try resetting the trip after the engine and oil were thoroughly warmed up and doing about 3 miles in sunday driver mode. Economy was outstanding, getting on for an indicated 75mpg. After 3 miles I got bored though! Haven't seen 70 on the display since!

Getting an indicated 48 mpg on my commute to work (20 mile round trip) - mostly A-roads and a bit of a city crawl

Longer runs have indicated between 53 and 63 mpg

5000 miles and counting on the clock.....
