Exhaust gas warning light on!

Hey guys,

The exhaust gas warning light went on today after 5mins (+-2km's) driving. The light is always on and doesn't blink. Drove the car immediately back very slowly after that, haven't done any highways today/or floored it as the car was still warming up. Should I drive it later today again and see if the light is/goes out? The car doesn't feel like it's damage or something, I wouldn't notice it apart from the light. I hope it's not a serious problem like a cylinder misfire that I came across at the 1.4TSI's

Going to get it scanned Monday as it is Saturday today and there are no garages open.
The car in question is a 2009 2.0 TSI DSG (200hp model).


Anyone had this problem before? Is it a broken lambdasonde (Oxygen sensor)? Is this a serious problem that needs to be dealt with ASAP (obv I'm going to do it, but I'm just wondering if this is a crucial fail..)

Ok, did slowly drive around the block and the light kept on.

The car does behave normally imo. No sudden rev jumps/drops (misfires?) when idle, nothing noticeable in terms of sound, unusually smoke from the exhaust, no strange mechanical sounds,.. In terms of performance I don't know as I didn't floor it as the car was still cold.

Will bring it into VW on Monday. Hopefully, it's just something small, kinda need the car Tuesday.

I had the same light come on just before Christmas, (Fault in the cat) or misfire, had it plugged in at the garage and says it was a faulty Post Cat Lambda Sensor (I'm still yet to get it put on) fault was cleared and the light hasn't popped up since.
But... I noticed it to be misfiring slightly, only on lower revs, and that was just a coil pack.
Hope you get it sorted mate

So they just cleared the error/code? Without replacing or fixing anything?

at the moment it's pointless speculating what the fault could be without first plugging in and checking the fault code. These cars are littered with so many sensors, it could be anything! Plug in and take it from there.

*UPDATE*

Ok so I came back from VW and the inlet manifold needs replacing as I was already thinking after searching the forum. Do a search on keyword inlet manifold you will find a lot of threads about early 2.0TSI's with same issue.

€773 including labor. Car will only go into labor the 15th march so 3 weeks no joyrides


*VW also suggested me to only tank 98 and not 95 with a 2l

Also they told me that I can still drive the car for small trips. Reckon I should just wait 3 weeks or sometimes drive it for small trips..?

i assume your car is out of warrenty?? If I was you I would be getting quotes from a VAG specialist because dealers charge WAY too much. As for fuel, yeah you should be using 98RON upwards on the 2.0T Petrol.

mate, i ALLWAYS tank with 99!! I would NEVER EVER put 95 in my car. Dont get me wrong, it wont do it any harm, but your car will run better on 98 upwards. These 2.0TSI engines were designed to run on higher octane fuels. If you live in UK, Tesco do a 99ron fuel and its very cheap (well in my local area it is).

I filled my tank using Tesco Momentum at the weekend for the same cost as standard Shell petrol at a garage a couple of hundred yards away from it.

122.9p for Momentum v. 139.9p for VPower which was a difference of £7.30 filling the tank.

wow those fuel prices are HIGH! Where in the UK are you? Tesco Momentum at my local was 117.9p on Saturday and my local VPower is 133.9p.

Here in Belgium it's +-
98 -> 1.44 / liter
95 -> 1.32 / l

or atleast that's what it was a few weeks ago, fcking expensive diesel is also the same priced as 95 atm

So I went for a small drive today and filled it up with 98.

I really dont notice anything apart from the light, temps are ok, fuel consumption is ok (although it might be a little bit higher, i don't really check it all that often). It's not idling rough, misfiring or anything and drives as normal (max rev'd it to 3k)

The only thing I noticed is that it idles just below the stripe not sure if it was on it before.


Maybe it's just leaking air out of the inlet very little and that's why the light comes on so early (as it also is an easy way to get the customers to buy new parts.. when they are still +-ok ?)
Non the less going to get the inlet manifold replaced the 15th.

Should I try to clear the error code and see if it comes on again?
How do I do this without vdcs? Unplug the battery for 15-30mins?

Just to see if the light comes back on
I believe it's still sitting in the memory even after clearing the error

not sure how to clear the fault without VCDS sorry, but, why not purchase a used inlet manifold? There are LOADS on ebay and they are cheap. Worth a try? My first port of call would be to clear the fault code and see how the car drives and see if the Engine warning light and the fault returns.

I have ordered an OBD2 adapter (https://caristaapp.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). Hopefully then I'll be able to read out the code and clean it
