Auto dipping mirror

Post by klippie »

I was driving in the dark last night and I noticed the rear view mirror doesn't dip when a car comes up behind its geen light is on so is there something else that nees to be set/done to make it work...:?:

The mirror itself doesn't dip down but when you have the green light on on your mirror it somehow filters the dazzle from the car behind to make it less harsh.
Come to think of it I don't know how that works.

They're made with a chemical coating on the mirror that reacts to the amount of light that hits it. The brighter the lightsource, the greater the absorbtion. If you look carefully at the mirror you'll see that a slight hue in the colour caused by the coating.

I always thought it was AutodiMMing rear view. It takes on a green hue when exposed to bright light. Like the green sheen seen on glasses coated with antiglare.

Although knowing VW dealers and their lack of knowledge, they'd probably have agreed there was a fault!

Well I was going to ask 'Why doesn't my rear view mirror work?'
This is the third car I've had now with this 'feature' and I hate them because they don't work!
If anyone can actually detect any anti dazzle, I think they must be imagining it!
Now I’m thinking about a Perspex tint to go over it or to get the rear blind fitted. Trouble is that’s not electric. I wish I had the basic lever job they work!
I must say I was going to ask my dealer next time I go in....

My auto dipping mirror works great on my Rocco and it did so too on my previous R32.

Only disappointment for me is that the door mirrors don't dip too on yje Rocco. The driver's one on my R32 did and it was great.

It's a photochromatic mirror - basically an LCD coating that darkens when the sensor picks up bright lights. When I worked for Jaguar it was planned to have a panoramic roof with the same technology so the owner could switch from tinted to black glass at the flick of a switch. It was canned due to the mahoosive cost!

It is LCD. The sensor by the switch detects the light and then the mirror dims by making the LCD darker. Similar to the black letters on a calculator screen. Mine works so well you don't notice it.
