Rattles and squeaks

Post by Alex230 »

Hi guys. It seems that my Rocco started to develop a lot of squeaks and rattles.
Nothing major, but on bad/bumpy roads the car sounds horrible. But when the car is wet (freshly washed or raining) everything disappears, and it's smooth and silent. So the issue only occurs when the car is dry. Tried to adjust the hatch bump stops from the tailgate, but that didn't help. I don't really know what to try to adjust or dampen since the noises are present all around the car when its dry.

I initially thought that its actually just plastic trim rattles inside the cabin, but it's not. As i said, if i thoroughly wash the car or it's raining, there is absolutely no rattles or squeaks.
Anyone else has this issue or something similar?

Where do i start to asses the rattles? Because it comes from everywhere, windows, boot-lid, door cards, rear panels...
Any help is gladly appreciated. Thank you.

I've just fixed a 'ticking' noise that was coming from behind the aircon/heater controls & Stereo - that was driving me nuts for months.... very satisfying when you can't hear it at all, regardless of road condition :)

You just have to choose your battles and focus on one at a time...

Yes, I would ,if I'd know where to start. Because of the wet/dry thing, i can't really pinpoint what's causing the rattles.
Seems like dust gets trapped between the bodywork panels or something, I can't tell.

What was causing the ticking issue?

Is it coming from the back ? I saw a thread not long ago and a few people were having rattling noises from the back it turned out to be the plastic boot struts

Yes, mostly from the back. I'll take a look the next days, we're gonna have some warm weather.
Also bought some self adhesive insulating closed cell foam to try and reduce vibrations as much as possible.
Any more suggestions are welcomed.

Let someone else drive your car and then you can sit in the back and localize where the noise is coming from.

you should look at this thread on how to adjust the strikers on the bootlid.

http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... adjustment" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Don't put WD40 or other lubricant in the striker as it rots the glue holding the spring and the whole things fall to bits..... just speaking from experience :)

Thanks guys. I've already adjusted the boot strikers, but that wasn't it.
Did the shotgun friend driver thing, sat in the front, in the back, and it seems that the rattles come from all around the car. It's not plastic rattle, it seems like the bolts and nuts are lose or something. But what surprises me is this issue only appears when the car is bone dry. If i wash it ( like today) everything sounds perfectly normal. So it can't be anything from the interior as water doesn't get inside of the car, obviously.

Im really intrigued by what it actually is.

I just had all my suspension springs replaced because a very small bit broke off the top of the OSF - the broken bit sat in the cup that the spring sits in and was rattling around for weeks, that one drove me nuts too.... check for that...

I just had the idea to WD40 the suspension springs and shocks plastic/rubber housings. So far so good, but as i said, just washed the car yesterday so it could still have some water trapped inside the body panels/undercarriage since last night was pretty damp.

It's about 20 deg C and sunny now, so it should dry up till I leave work today.

Will keep you posted. Thanks guys!

Do you also have the panoramic roof rattle?

I don't have a panoramic roof :)

So a little update, had a short drive back from work, and it seems to be a bit better since I lubed the suspension with wd40. I'll have a longer drive tonight, much quieter environment so I'll be able to check it out better.

I wanted to change a bulb on the rear left light, but the plastic spring pin that holds the light in place just rotates freely and i can't get the light out. The light is fixed in place thoroughly, won't budge tho.

Suggestions?

Lucky you hehe. I have just put some tape under the roof lining that surrounds the panoramic roof, hoop this will delete the rattle.
You mean the plastic pin with the spring, thats the only thing that holds the light in place. You can't pull the light of the bumper away from the car when you remove the whole screw?
Thats strange.

Hope that tape does the job! :)

Yes, that's the pin. It just rotates in the socket, it gives some resistance when turning it either way, but it won't unscrew, so i can't take it off. And no, the light doesn't move, it's fixed in place. What could be broken?

If it was broken i expect it would come out partially because of the spring.
Maybe try to pull it outwards when you are turning it. The trhread could also be damaged.

Welp, no chance with the tailight screw. I'll have to rip it off and buy a replacement, the thread is probably gone...

On the rattles issue, no luck, rattles ar back and i guess i'll have to insulate the door panels, rear panels, boot trim and so on cause i can here them creeking. Still don't understand why it makes absolutely no sounds when the car is wet...that is the dillemma...

One question, do your door handles squeek when you grab them to open, or close the door? Or when you just grab them and give them a tight squeeze?

That's exactly what happens to me.

I did some asking around and i tend to think it's related to the shocks/springs and bushings.

Why don't you take it to a garage for them to have a proper look... Where abouts are you based?
