Shipping a Scirocco from Northern Ireland to London...help?

Post by muzia »

I am a prospective buyer for a scirocco in london. I found the perfect model at the perfect price on autotrader from an approved used dealer except they're in belfast and I'm in london!

Does anyone know of stigma attached to re-registering a car from Northern Ireland on the mainland? I know NI is part of the UK and is in effect no different from Eng Scot and Wales but this is more-so for resale issues!

Any help or advice would be appreciated

As far as I'm aware there is no issue at all and you don't need to re-register it. If you don't like the Irish plate then put a private one on it.

In which of the 4 nations of the UK the car has been registered in, has no impact on resale value.

Thank you friend! My other concern is if there's any general stigma attached to buying a car from NI if I were to sell it privately...I mean personally I don't see that there is but just trying to cover all my bases here :/

I can see no reason for any stigma as the car is an official UK model but you can't predict people's opinion. I've even heard people saying they won't buy cars from Scotland because the weather is colder and we use more salt so the cars must more, which is obviously rubbish.

You pays your money you takes your chance.

I'm in Northern Ireland and have just sold my low mileage 2013 1.4 (160) TSI to an approved dealer a few weeks ago. I've since seen it advertised for £3k more than I got for it. Perhaps I should have offered it on here first!

As has been said, you can simply re-register the vehicle if you don't like the NI registration mark (although I, unsurprisingly, prefer them to GB registrations).

I'd also point out that if your potential vehicle is old enough to have been MOT'd then MOTs in NI are performed in government test centres, not private garages. I'm quite sure GB MOTs are entirely trustworthy, but you can definitely be sure as to the independence and quality of an NI MOT.

Also sounds like a great excuse for a holiday and roadtrip to go pick it up!
