VW reduces production of the Scirocco

Post by Strakata »

Just to let you guys know that VW has just decided (2 hours ago) to REDUCE its daily output production of the Scirocco and EOS to 300 units/day.

VW only manufactures the Scirocco here in Portugal and the factory is at 60% capacity but still VW has decided to reduce its output.
I find it outrageous, especially considering that I ordered the car in April and have a delivery time of NOVEMBER.

These guys just don't care about customers (and their sales).

yes its true, but they'll reduce in September the Eos end Scirocco, not now. But because of the employees negotiations, the car delivery is delayed, for example mine was supposed to be build this week, but Autoeuropa said week 40, damn...

Scirocco1974,
Unfortunately I live in Portugal and VW just does not give a **** to our country even though the car is built here.

Ayeaye,
Sorry, I only have it in Portuguese: http://www.jornaldenegocios.pt/index.ph ... &id=374456

This has been in the pipeline for a long time, only a dispute with the workforce has delayed it's enforcement. I have noticed in the last months the brokers have extended there quoted lead times and lots of people on the forums quoting long lead times.

Although in some areas the Roc seems to pop up everywhere the production volumes were never going to be anything like that of the Golf as it is more of a niche vehicle. There are already more MKVI Golfs on the road than the Scirocco and it has been out for a much shorter time, well certainly around here there is.

On the plus side for those of us who have already taken delivery this should help with the residuals if only to a small degree.

Hope the delivery scenario improves for those waiting for there cars!

FWIW

I ordered at the end of May (in the UK), got a confirmed build week of Wk 28, just checked a few moments ago and the build week is still confirmed as week 28. I was also advised that this cannot now change (although I'm not sure that last bit is strictly true)!

I think that maybe there's some misinformation here or at least that the information does not apply to all markets as different countries get different factory allocations. So if production is slowed it does not neccessarily follow that output for for a particular country is affected. Of course my heart goes out to any that are though.

I'm so glad I didn't wait until Sept to get a 59 plate Roc, nearly waited, but the allocation swap Roc available within 2 weeks made it so that I couldn't wait!

My mate has just placed an order - hope he isn't waiting too long for his.

I think there was only ever supposed to be 9000 Rocs a year produced for the UK, and we're supposed to be the biggest target market (more expected to be sold in the UK than Germany).

Strakata: So when you talk about 300 units a day for the Portugal plant, do you mean that as a combined figure, or 300 Sciroccos and 300 Eos' per day? based upon 5 days a week for 48 weeks of the year (summer and christmas shutdown), thats only 72000 cars, potentially only 36000 each for Scirocco and Eos. I'd expect the Eos to sell fewer units than the Scirocco.

Not sure why we don't see many Eos' in the UK, the UK loves it's cabriolets, and the Eos is a cut above the popular Peugeot 307 and Renault Megane variants in quality, for not much more money (and significantly cheaper than the Audi/BMW/Merc choices).

I can't see why VW are cutting production, demand is definitely outstripping supply, in the UK at least - my dealer can't get hold of any to sell, they've sold 24 of their 28 allocated cars for 2009 already.

Once you have a fixed / confirmed build date on the "VW dialog system" that the dealer has access to your spec has been allocated a build slot which shouldn't change unless something major happens and they are missing bits that can't simply be bolted on after the car has left the producion line.

This is also the point in which your specification cannot be changed. There are always exceptions to the lead time rules, if you spec a car that matches one that is already schedueled to be built and has not been allocated to a customer / dealer you may get allocated that car and receive it quicker than the standard build time. Don't forget not every car is built to order, 100's of cars are built to a colour combo / specification chosen by the manufacturer.

You may even spec a car exactly the same as an unallocated one that is already in the UK unregistered and get your car within a couple of weeks.

These Scenarios are becoming less and less common though as demand starts to outstrip supply and people compromise there specifications to get a Roc in a reasonable amount of time.

Get your dealer to regularly check the Dialog / Dialogue system for updates.

Right now they are producing ~240 Sciroccos per day (and ~100 EOS, i think). Despite working 6 days per week, the factory will stop 22 days during 2009 and, last Wednesday, the management of the factory has decided to add an additional 10 days stop happening between September and December by sending the workers home on a layoff.
Makes sense, doesn’t it?.......

There’s only a production line at the Portuguese factory but it is capable of building both the EOS, Scirocco and Sharan so there's really no excuse for any lack of flexibility.

I'm more than happy with the way my Scirocco is screwed together, i've had a Spanish built Polo which had obvious manufacturing defects that should have been picked up by the factory and the PDI, same with a German built Golf. From first impressions, those Portu-geezers do a better job than the Germans in building cars. I'm also a fan of Superbock beer.

Production stepdown seems a daft choice for a car that is in demand and selling.

Don't criticise them for their summer shutdown - that downtime is needed for big scale annual work that just can't be done while production is going on, but stopping work at set points between Aug and Dec seems strange.

The "problem" is that sales of VW in Germany grew 36% last month (relative to the same month in 2008) due to high tax incentives granted by the German government. Because Golfs and Polos are "flying of the shelves" in Germany the part suppliers are not able to keep up with the demand (specially the engines).

Facing a decision between the Golf/Polo and the Scirocco, VW opted by the classic models leaving us in the dust. :grumpy:
