Scirocco 1.4 160 Engine noise

Post by Humphries92 »

Hi all, hope you can help.

My car is currently making a strange noise when the clutch is depressed and in neutral, this doesn't happen every time and doesn't seem to be dependent on if the engine is cold all not. I haven't experienced any problems when driving in any of the gears and the noise isn't heard when on the move (this could be due to background noise covering it). I brought the car second hand and it is currently still under warranty wise cover so hopefully any work will be covered. I have included a link which shows a video of the noise. Just want to know if this is something i need to worry about as i don't want to cause any damage.

Unusual noise from the video but I suspect that is the quality of the audio making it difficult to hear properly.

Usually noises like this that are directly related to clutch application and release are either release bearing/slave cylinder or dual mass flywheel. I'm not sure if the 1.4 TSI is fitted with a dual mass flywheel.

It's possible a clutch Spring has broken too if it receives regular abuse but less likely to be the case.

Either would most probably warrant the gearbox removing to diagnose fully, if the sounds in the video are as serious as they sound.

Hi Wakey1512 thanks for the response.

Just got the car back from the garage. Its had new bearing and seals in the gear box and a new clutch kit fitted. The noise still seems to be there but slightly quieter, i'm not sure if its me. Iv'e spoken to the mechanic who said that everything that needed changing has been changed and everything which is left seemed fine. Should there be a change in noise when the clutch is engaged ?

Fortunately the warranty company (warranty wise) paid out a large chunk of the repairs bills which i am great full for. I'm not to concerned as the mechanic reassured me but is there anything i should be looking out for in the future?

Thanks.

Quick upate.

I have driven the car for around 100 mile without problem but still with the noise. I have done some research and found that there is such thing as neutral gear roll over so i am putting it down to this as everything that can or needed to be changed has been.

thanks.

My last car, made quite a different noise when the clutch pedal was pressed down compared to up - didn't cause any problems though in 50K miles.

On other cars where the clutch in/out was noisy it was always the clutch release bearing. Had them replaced once or twice over the years.
