Radiator Fan

Just got back from the supermarket and after I switched the car off and got out the radiator fan kicked in. It stayed on for a good five minutes and was quite loud. I don't know much about the mechanics of cars so wondered if someone could reassure me this is normal? I don't recall this happening before.

The radioator fan is temperature controled, and don't really care whether the ignition is turned or not - if the engine is hotter than X then it starts, and does not stop untill its good and ready (engine is at temp. Y)

Five minutes sounds about right, if You gave it a beating or just came from a stretch of motorway/highway/parkway/fairway

ABN1C - I had a Golf Mk5 GTTdi with roughly the same engine (It was the PD nor CR version that you have) and the diesels get very hot, and yes on a hot day or a long 'excitable' drive, the fan would stay on for a good 5 minutes after you get in. Perfectly normal. I would check your oil regularly too, as mine used to drink it like a fish for the first 10,000 miles or so

I have a 2010 1.4tsi scirocco. My fan keeps turning when I switch on the car. What could be the issue

Does the fan turn straight on even when the engine is cold? The fan should only kick in as stated above when the engine is at a certain temperature, if yours is kicking in when cold it would suggest there is an issue.. most likely coolant temp sensor.
If as above it’s only when the temp is hot then I wouldn’t worry to much as this can be completely normal, it isn’t unusual for a fan to cool the engine down to the required temp.

I've not checked on my Scirocco but on other VWs I've had, if A/C is switched on, one of the radiator fans can run at a slow speed to pull air over the condensor. If you switch off A/C then it will stop running. At higher coolant temps the fan runs at high speed and is much louder.
