Grinding noise from engine..

Post by samir786 »

After 600 miles on the clock, im now starting to hear a grinding noise coming from the engine bay area just before the car changes gear. Only seems to be between the 2-3000 rev range and then the noise goes. The car still drives as normal, no loss of power etc, but the noise is worrying. Will call the dealers tomorrow and get it booked in to check over..
Have any of you guys had a similar experience?

sounds like the noise alot of people are complaining about. I wouldn't describe it as a grinding noise others have described it as a metallic rattling / rasping noise that comes and goes between 2000-3000 rpm. Some have already checked the car at their local dealership only to be told its normal and they all do that. I can't believe that its acceptable for a car to make such a noise. The exhaust is number 1 suspect

Others have said audis, skoda and vw all make the same noise but i've never heard it.

Has anyone with say a mark 5 golf Gti ever had anything like this?

There is no way I am accepting that the noise is common and its meant to be like that. No engine should make that noise, never mind a car that is brand new and worth over 20k. I will call the dealer and get them to check, will keep you guys updated..

Mine's at the dealer's right now getting it checked out ... they are keeping it today and tomorrow, but they agree that it shouldn't make that noise.

Will keep you posted on the outcome !!

Mine went to the dealer today for something that sounds similar, I was not the first to raise the same issue. Rattle at ~3k from the turbo/exhaust , worse when car is hot and under load in high gear.

The Demo made the same noise, I took it out to be convinced. Its a resonance in the exhaust that they do not think they can do anything about (no response from VW Technical).

They cannot do anything about it? I wont accept that to be honest, because surely if it was a common problem, everybody on this site would have that issue...?

Lucky U!
Well I know VW dealers are known for fobbing customers off, trying to take the easy way out etc.
But im defo not accepting the fact that this issue is common and cannot be resolved, and wont go without having a courtesy car. Not paying so many hundreds per month for me to be without a car :shake:

Courtesy car is a minimum, and don't get fobbed off with a polo. They will have a Golf GTI and a 'Rocco on there Demo fleet (unless they are a very small outfit)... If you are not happy with the first dealer, try another one, they do vary in service levels and knowledge. Insist on taking a 'tech' out in the car to demonstrate the problem/noise so they can trace the issue. I have even resorted to talking to an independent specailist if I am not happy and gone back to the dealer to get the work done for free having shown them what to do! If you still do not get it sorted ring VW customer services, they can really make things happen!

I've got the 'noise' too between 2000-3000 revs but would not describe it as grinding, sounds more like a 'whoosh'. Unless somebody gets better info on here, I personally think it's a normal noise and no cause for alarm.

This sounds like the VW dealer service we all know and love, replace a number of parts and not know whether it will fix the issue. The VW warranty charge fund must be a bottomless pit. I've had so many experiences of VW technicians replacing stuff in hope of solving an issue. I suppose it's ok while VW are picking up the tab, i'd be less inclined if I was paying the dealer to replace a part that might solve the problem.

These dealers really don't seem to know much on a lot of occasions, apart from how to bleed VW dry for warranty work. I previously had a cylinder head replaced for a "casting defect" when the economy was poor on a Golf, only to find out later that the problem was still there and was eventually solved by an official remap.

New turbo ..... same noise.

VW technical replied to the dealer saying they don't know of any issue .... suggest you all start going to the dealer and getting it logged with VW, so maybe they'll put some time into finding a resolution.

Took the VW Technician out last week to show him the noise and told him of the huge amount of people all seemingly reporting the same thing - he agreed to check to see if there were any known issues. Received an email later saying "I have checked via Diss for any Technical Products Solutions for your Scirocco and there are non available relating to vibrations through rev ranges".

He said the only solution is to get the car up on the ramp to trace the vibration. I'm absuloutely amazed that VW don't seem to know what this could be when there are so many people who seem to have exactly the same noise! It's just a shame cos it certainly doesn't seem to affect performance - just annoying.

So Scotsman,
you had a new turbo and a new pipe and it still didnt fix the issue?
I would have thought its something to do with the turbo as you dont hear the noise when revving between 2-3k in neutral, only seems to be when driving.

Jake - Your are right, no performance issues but the noise is annoying, especially when the windows are down and your mates ask you what that noise is, and why your brand new car is making that noise! :)

Had mine on the ramp trying to find it too! Failed, it only makes a noise under load with some boost on, the exhaust is not the same as the gti and my dealer thinks that's where the noise comes from...

I get a similar noise too. It sounds a lot like a rattle I used to get from the exhaust on my old (-old!) Passat but nowhere near as bad. Eventually figured out that it was the heatshield behind the cat that was slightly loose and used to resonate at certain revs - could be something similar?
