Kenwood Canbus Battery Drain?

Post by V5pdt »

Hi, I have recently fitted a dnx525dab head unit with the canbus module for full steering wheel integration.
The only problem is that something seems to be causing the battery to drain. I have noticed the green led on the canbus stays lit even with no keys in the ignition.
Does anyone know if there is a vcds fix for this or anything I can do to switch the canbus?
I have tried swapping over the permanent and the ignition cables (red and yellow ones) and this just removes the memory capabilities of the unit....
Any help or suggestions welcome!
Thanks
Phil

Hopefully someone who has fitted a Kenwood can give you a heads up. The only suggestion I can offer is that the MK5 golf had similar problems and it was the module which required upgrading. Are you sure you have fitted the correct CANBUS module as there is more than one and it depends on car year etc.

Just install latest updates to the head unit. It's 1.7.0. Also update Bluetooth and dab+ receiver.
It al in the same screen. Just put the files in the root of a usb stick. Put the radio in stand-by mode and update.
The interface can also be updated its on the bottom called vehicle info. Newest is 1.4. But start with the headunit firmware, bluetooth and dab+.
The leds on the canbus are always lighted because its always active. So don't worry about it.
I have the same interface and no battery drains or what so ever.

http://www.kenwood.com/cs/ce/mm/firmwar ... c/eng.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (here the newest firmware is 1.6.0, a little bit strange because i have 1.7.0 on it when i bought it.

http://www.kenwood.eu/car/support/kim/kim-up/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

After update if your navigation is off route, you have to re-select the installed map in the menu.

How to get turn by turn signs in your instrument cluster. (kimun1 interface)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Go to module 19 - can gateway
Select: installation list.
Now check 37.Navigation and save coding.
Restart you car and you will have a navigation screen added wich will show the turn by turn signs when you are following a route in you navigation.
The compass will not work and vcds cannot communicate with the Kenwood receiver.

Thanks for your help, I'll give it a try when I'm back at the weekend.
I have the red mfd in mine...would this have any effect on the canbus? I have the CAW-KIMUN1 unit. Also do you know what the four dip switches on the side of the unit do??
Thanks again

The battery don't drain with that tiny led lights.
The dipswitches are a kind of setting so it can receive information from the canbus.

Finally got around to refitting the stereo and trying the firmware update. Like you I have 1.7.0 installed but it won't let me change the version to 1.6.0.
Dab and Bluetooth update went fine....
Any clues @Roy01
Thanks in advance!

Hi,

You already have the newest firmware V1.7.0 just like me, so you don't have to change it.
If you scroll down there is also a firmware for the vehicle version for the kimun1 interface.
If you have version 1.4 then it's the newest version. Glad it worked out for you.
Do you still have the problems with battery drain?

Thanks for the quick response! I have the latest firmware but I haven't changed that, it must've been installed when I bought the unit.
I have scrolled down and it says vehicle version V:12....do I need to upgrade this?
Haven't had chance to see if I have the battery drain yet as only just plugged it back in....been busy with work and hardly driven the car!!
Thanks

If this doesn't sort out it's an idea to use a clamp on current measuring device.
So you can locate wich source is draining the battery.
Can you turn on your radio when your car is key is out of the ignition?

Left the radio out with just the canbus unit in and it still drained the battery!
No the unit doesn't turn on when the key is out of the ignition....
I've been into vcds and disabled radio from the canbus installation list, if this doesn't work I think I'll have to change my canbus unit.....
Thanks for your help anyway Roy_01!

Ah that a real pain in the ass. I can't imagine a radio that isn't on or a canbus device can drain the battery. I would think of some bigger power consumer, electric seat heating or rear window heating that doesn't turn off. Do some current measurings or vcds fault reading so you can exclude something.

I find it hard to believe too but that's the case. Nothing is affected and the battery doesn't drain when the stereo or canbus mod aren't connected....
It's a waiting game for a few days now!

Thanks for asking....deselecting the radio in the canbus section of vcds didn't fix it.
Going to order another canbus module ( a newer version) as have read that sometimes people have suffered this too when upgrading to an rns510.
Gonna have to have a good route to find the module though!

What part number Canbus gateway have you got at the moment? If you've a log of VCDS then it'll be saved in there.

I have a 1k0 907 530 AB in it and HW: 1k0 907 951.
With the same radio i don't have this problem.
Maybe it helps with searching for the right part.

Have a look here for incompatible canbus part numbers. http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.ph ... trofitting" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But I'm not convinced the canbus gateway is your problem really.
