problem or not?

Post by sciroccorich »

When either pulling off (no rude jokes) from a stand still or cruising at low revs, if I am barely touching the accelerator (feathering it) my 2.0TSI ocassionaly appears to hesitate or shudder.

Not really noticed this before but I'm not sure if this is normal or actually a problem, just on the point of boost doing its job .

Is it just the nature of a turbocharged engine (slight lag)? I always thought this was just a delay before boost kicks in, this is more of a quick stutter than a delay before accelerating.

If it isn't normal, I was thinking spark plugs, ignition coils or sticking diverter valve (recirculating valve). I'm not getting any fault codes or warning lights / mfd info.

Is this normal when feathering the accelator (yes I know I should put pedal to flaw....lol) or does this sound like an issue?

The shudder under light acceleration is not normal.

How many miles? - when were sparks last changed (if ever).

I would suspect sparks, or if mileage near or over 50k miles then carbon build up on the intake valves (this is particularly an issue with long term sedate driving and can occur as low as 30-40k miles if the car is generally driven for max fuel economy (light throttle))

This sounds identical to the issue i had with my 2.0tsi. Tried both dealer and specialist and niether could find fault codes. I did read up about carbon build up issues and that sounded alot like the problem i was having. Tried a Engine Carbon Clean company and that was useless.

As you can hopefully see from the pictures in the link, the carbon clean made no difference whatsoever. I was about 6 hours labour and 40 min to clean each port. Total bill about £400 but so totally worth it. It feels like a new machine.

How lucky of me reading this posts, i have the same issue with my 2.0tsi and even after changing plugs and coils (which i understand after couple of years is recommended), it has the same delay at low revs.
Will definitely try this :)

TheRustySheriff,

Who did your carbon clean up for £400 and is this something a VW dealer would do?

It doesn't really affect the way the car drives as it is barely noticeable!

My current car when I got it, fairly older and non turbo, used to do very similar to what you describe. It would also take a couple of turns of the key to fire up. Throttle body was absolutely filthy, literally it was just black inside, probably not helped by the oil breather returning into the intake pipe right before the throttle body. I whipped it off and gave it a good clean inside with some carb cleaner and a toothbrush and it's done nothing of the sort since, runs and starts much smoother and throttle is far more responsive.

It could be something so simple, worth checking out the easy things for yourself before spending money on getting someone to look at it.

Sciroccorich,

I took the car to a local VW specialist who carried out the work. Was about 6/7 hours labour in total. I did get a quote from my local dealer and they were closer to £550 for the same work.
U
As for the Engine Carbon Clean company that use hydrogen gas pumped through the air intake, i wouldn't touch them again or recommend them to anybody. Total rubbish. I found them on facebook and they robbed me £100.

Hopefully after the work is done, you will notice a difference. When my car was at its worst, i just wanted to dump it at the side of the road and burn the sodding thing out!

Lol......like I said, I'm not even sure my car actually has an issue yet or whether im just imagining something, it just feels like something very very minor has developed over the last months.

If there is an issue I think it more noticeable when the engines cold but it's so barely noticeable.

Maybe I'm too fussy or going a bit mad!.....lol

It took me a while to convince myself there was a problem.

Sciroccorich,

Did you ever get this sorted?
I am having the same issue with mine at the moment, 2.0 TSI. Seems to be a hesitation and shudder before it starts pulling when I accelerate.

I haven't taken it to a garage yet, partly due to not being able to explain it fully myself!

Mine has 70K on it and a little bit of hesitation. Seriously considering removing the manifold myself, and having a good clean out. Only thing stopping me is the injectors. Worried I will damage them!
