Illumination of dashboard.

Hi guys!
Picked up a new facelift R-Line last week and noticed the following.
When I have the sidelights on, the dash cluster is not illuminated.
When the main lights are on, the dash cluster is illuminated.
My dealer says this is normal and not a fault. Can any of you guys assist?

This is normal behaviour. There is a light sensor in the instrument cluster that dims/brighten the lightening. But with the light switch in the off or side light position it wil only light up the needles if you drive trough a tunnel or something to warn you that your dipped beams are not on. The dials are fully dimmed at that time.
You see it often that some stupid people are driving only with their front drl lights on when its dark outside, this is a thing to prevent this happening.

Thanks Roy.
This must be a new "feature" then as my 62 plate Roc GT illuminated the dash when 'sidelights' were turned on.

On my 2012 Rocco, when sidelights are on, the cluster IS illuminated but when is on DRL only (daylight or on 0), it's all dark with only needles on.
You see very often a lot of stupid people during night with lights off, only DRL. But that's different. DRL is very bright and people might think it's on dipped beams. Now it's different.

You're right guys normally the gauge surrounding are lighted when side lights are on.
I heared the behaviour of the instrumentlights are changeable with vag can pro software.
