2.0TSI Clutch issue

Post by gollfy »

Hi All,
Purchased a 2010 2.OTsi 33k miles Full VW History at the end of April this year from a VW Main Dealer, was over 100 miles away from me and came with a Das Welt warranty.

I have covered only 3500 miles in 6 months and my roc has developed the usual clutch moan which is reported all over this forum and others.

Took to a my local VW dealer today, diagnosis is a new clutch which as you guess is not covered under warranty.

Really annoyed that I have just forked out 13.5k on a car that needs a new clutch

Reading the different posts, some people have had it done under warranty, some not

Have shown them the TS Document which is floating about but that has made no difference.

Have I just got to bite the bullit and pay up? Is it worth contacting the original vw dealer that sold me the car?

Thanks for your help.

Take the issue up with VW Customer Services, especially if you feel your issue is a common fault.

When was the car originally registered ?

If it's under 5 years, you should be able to get a contribution, I have twice.

You'll need full vw service history, & it helps if your on a monthly service plan too,

Lots of info here, if it's the same issue of the release bearing. Normally that's the issue and they suggest a clutch kit replacement whilst they're there anyway:

http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... =2&t=18137" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.sciroccocentral.co.uk/forum/ ... =2&t=18573" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you're willing to persist and put some research into the matter which you can then present to them, plus consider a service plan as mentioned above, then most likely you'll get some help back. Good luck. :)

How bad is the noise?

Mine is intermittent and is more noticeable when the weather is colder, and i have been living with it for 2 years. I have no drive ability issues etc so i would rather get on with it than pay VW for a new clutch.

I was advised by a friend who works in a garage/repair workshop, and knew I wasn't going to them for the work, that the issue is not unsafe but that continuing without repairing it for a long period could cause it to worsen and potential further damage could occur to the gearbox casing. I'm not knowledgeable in any way regarding the inner workings of my car so it's purely based upon this info I was given, however the issue certainly got progressively worse for me and I suppose the longer you leave it the less likely you'll get any help towards it. Worth considering also anyway. :)

The cold weather does make it more noticeable, I think it's something to do with the oil pressure (although that could be total BS)

I had this problem a few months ago, it is usually the release bearing (csc) going and I changed mine for a genuine VW part, it is of metal construction rather than mostly plastic on originally fitted part.

I also fitted a new uprated clutch from sachs performance (disc and cover) and a new DMF also Sachs to prepare to cope with a stage 2 remap.

Luckily though I had some very well equipped and knowledgable friends to help do this work, so labour charge was more than fair :)
It would be good to change the clutch especially as its apart but at an extra £400+ its another bill to fork out for.
Decisions to be made!
Hope you get things sorted! :D

Gollfy.........Psycho Kirky is right, it is the clutch release bearing. The CRB is a rubbish two piece mainly plastic looking part that leaks oil mainly in cold conditions.

You have to tell them that this is common issue known by VW and is a result of a bad design and therefor is now a defect part. I had mine replaced under warranty as a result of not accepting that this was the caused by wear and tear, the warranty company will pay out on defect parts.

VW will always try and bull sh*t their way out of this but stand your ground, be confidant and make them aware that you've done your research and know the history of this defect part.

They will give in and tell the warranty company it's a defect part, this will get you a new CRB and the labour under warranty. Like me and Psycho Kirky did, pay for a new clutch yourself (£200) while they've got your gearbox off anyway (unless it's relitively new) because it will save you £500-600 worth of labour in the future and your car will run sweet.

The revised part is a 1 piece all metal design.

@ Psycho Kirky how does the Sachs compare to the original clutch? Much difference in pedal feel etc? I will be changing mine at some stage and i believe the two options are either Sachs or Helix.

Is this all i would need?

Well I have an uprated clutch. On Sachs website it is the one saying 550nm, the torque it can withstand basically.
The pedal feels very stiff on comparison and the bite point seems alot lower than standard. But you soon get used to it and it is a very strong positive feeling clutch which can easily handle power increases from remaps.
If you are looking at an uprated Sachs Performance clutch email them if you are unsure.
They recommended their clutch plate and the cover which came to about £480 posted I think. The Sachs DMF I got was from Euro Car Parts for about £290 I think.
Changing the clutch is never cheap or easy but once its done it feel alot better and should in theory last longer because of better quality parts.

Im glad I had it done, all be it an expensive upgrade i think its worth it especially if considering increasing power!

OEM clutch should be able to cope with a stage one remap, as long as you dont dump the whole torque load into it all the time.

P.S: Does anyone know the torque limit figures for the OEM clutch?

Sound probably happens every morning one or twice when cold.

Vw dealer informed me I have to wait for it to get worse as they are unable to diagnose 100% but they was aware of the TS article that I have mentioned.

Ill try and give VW Customer care a call shotrly and see if they can help.

Yes, above is true. They wont have any of it till they have received a diagnostics report from the dealer (involves dropping the gear box) - No way around that one.

Well, £450 to remove and refit the gearbox....

Is it worth the gamble? On the off chance they may offer goodwill?

I took the gamble.. but then, I am pretty headstrong and was adamant I could prove the issue to be non-wear related.. Also, I had their courtesy car which they desperately wanted back
