Miles Per Tank? 170 GT
Miles Per Tank? 170 GT
Hey guys,
I've had my 170 GT for almost 2 weeks now and i seem to be filling the car up way more than i used to with my BMW 1 series (also a 2 litre diesel but a 143bhp). Right now the car says 70 Miles to empty and the gauge says i have 3/16 left in the tank. I filled the car up on Saturday to the notch just above the 1/2 mark which is 9/16. From 9/16 to 3/16 i have done 147 miles! I do about 33 miles a day on motorway and the rest town driving!
The car had been sitting for 6 months and not driven more than 700 miles in that time. Would you be giving the car a service? It was last serviced 700 miles ago in December 14.

Thought about resetting the MFD? Could be taking its numbers from the previous owners figures and if he was heavy footed then you could be shocked by those numbers

Hey mate, doesn't this reset each time the car turns off?philjay92 wrote:Thought about resetting the MFD? Could be taking its numbers from the previous owners figures and if he was heavy footed then you could be shocked by those numbers

Nope there's a journey mpg and overall represented by the one or two in the top corner. If you press ok on your steering wheel it should change. To reset hold down ok on whichever you would like go reset.Abhatoa wrote:Hey mate, doesn't this reset each time the car turns off?philjay92 wrote:Thought about resetting the MFD? I'm now gonna go to my car to check what I've told you here isn't a load of crap haha

Haha, I'll have a look when i get out of work. I'm just thinking the car uses loads of fuel in general tbh! My sister gets 210 miles for 30£ in her 170 GTD and i think for that i get around 180 maybe less!

If you aren't filling the tank to exactly the same level every time, you're bound to get some variation. One litre of fuel could mean an extra 10 miles between readings - about 5% variation if you're doing around 200m between fill-ups.
If your sister is paying £1.20 per litre, then £30 is approx 25 litres. Using that to cover 210 miles gives you 8.4 miles per litre or approx 38 mpg. That must mean a fair bit of town driving or heavy shoes ( ! )
My 170TDi routine returns 50+mpg and I usually fill the tank so it is full. Depending on journeys, I can get 550 - 600 miles out of the usually 45 litres to refill. I'm a bit of an anorak so have logged each refuel and the readings from the dashboard computer every time. I have also worked out the "real" mpg based on mileage between refills and amount of fuel bought. My dashboard computer is a little bit optimistic for my liking but not so far out as to be worryingly wrong.
If the car has seen only short journeys before you bought it, there could be a couple of reasons for your low mpg:
1) It is still "tight" from manufacture and will loosen up a little over the next 2,000 miles - with improved mpg
2) The filters and DPF are a bit clogged because they haven't got hot enough to burn out all the grot that accumulates
If you take the car for a brisk drive - getting it up into 3,000 rpm or more (motorways in 6th gear, or nice A-roads in 4th and 5th) that should put some heat through there over the course of an hour or so, which might reduce the soot-factor a fair bit.
Maybe you should fill the tank, reset both the "1" and "2" memories on the dash computer (see owners handbook) and then drive until the fuel warning comes on, refilling and checking the "2" overall reading.
Hope this helps a bit

Cheers for all that mate. I have reset the computer now and filled up the tank fully. I shall meet and eye on it and hope to see some good results. Going to get the oil and filter changed on Saturday also. The range says 450 at the moment. Does anyone recommend any oil for the 170 TDI?Deagol wrote:If you aren't filling the tank to exactly the same level every time, you're bound to get some variation. Re: Miles Per Tank? 170 GT
I also get between 550 and 600 miles per tank out of my 170.
With regards to oil, any brand of 5w30 that meets VW507.00 will do the job.

Re: Miles Per Tank? 170 GT
Slight thread hijack, but I've currently got a 140 tdi golf and looking at swapping to 2.0tsi scirocco but concerned about fuel, currently get 300 miles to £30...what the real world mpg to a tank range on a tsi, I.e cost to fill and how many miles or even people's standard mpg figs would be great.
