Advice please on selling my 170GT

Post by Rog_VW »

Hello all, I am after some advice...

I'm selling my black 60 plate 170 GT diesel Scirocco, but I have had very little interest. It's done 81000 with full VW service history and I have priced it at under £10,000 which I think is a good price. My wife and I have owned VWs for the past 12 years and they have always been easy to sell until now...

One thing that might be putting people off is that the cambelt hasn't been replaced, but my local VW specialist says that this is not due until 5 years or 140,000 miles and my car won't be 5 years old until August. Should I get the cambelt done early to sell the car?

I'm sure the milage is a lot lower than 140k, I know on my Golf (which was the same engine) it was 4 years or 40k. Also even if it was 5 year the 'Rocco will still need it doing within the next 6 months. Maybe people aren't keen on the prospect of a £3-400 bill only a couple of months into the ownership of their new 10k car.

Maybe get it replaced, it might be worth consulting the service manual or VW directly to find out exactly what the replacement intervals are.

I would get the cambelt done as I'm sure it will put off potential buyers.

You are correct, it's 140,000 miles or 5 years for cars registered after Sep 2009 and 140,000 miles or 4 years for those registered before.

Thanks for the advice, I'll get it done and put that in the advert. I'll also need to do my wife's Passat as well as that is a 2010 car...

Have you posted the ad on here? May be worth doing as people show their interest on the forums, also other members may have suggestions for advertisment and/or could suggest to others looking! I often have people showing interest in my roc and say they are looking for one and im much happier to suggest other forum members than a random off autotrader :)

I think the problem here is the mileage. People automatically think a car with that mileage is coming up for a lot of expense (whether correct or not is irrelevant). If you can only afford £10k for a car in the first place, you are not likely to have a lot of spare dosh for repairs. If you buy from a dealer you will pay a bit more but normally get some sort of warranty.

Thanks for the advice, I have booked it in on 16th April for the cambelt to be done at my local VW specialist. I'll put it on here now, I am guessing that it is the Showroom section?

It really is a gorgeous car with no marks on the bodywork and looks amazing when it is washed and polished. My wife and I have had VWs for over 12 years and we've never had any problems with them and we usually keep them until around 120k miles and 6/7 years old, but my wife has started lift sharing with another Mum and as we have 3 children she needs 5 seats in both our cars as we swap to keep the mileage level.

Hopefully someone will fancy a 170GT on here... :)
