Cheapest Castrol Edge FST 5W - 30

Post by TimH »

Not sure if anyone can beat this offer but I have recently purchased 5 litres of oil from mytyres for £31.20 including delivery.
Best price I could find and should last me a good few months.
1 litre can is £8 and 20 litre can £118.30
Here's a link to the items;

Hope you find this useful or if you find it cheaper elsewhere please post and share with others.....

When I took my Scirocco for a service, they said that they always use long life oil.

Is Castrol Edge FST 5W 30 classed as a long life oil that you would use on a long life service regime or is it only for the 12 month interval type service?

I'm sure I read somewhere that you have to use Castrol Edge Professional 5W 30 long life.

Gets confusing when your service manual reads long life oil used and the sticker in your window reads interval.

Costco have sold that for £26 at one point. That was the cheapest I have seen for 5 litres. Have you looked on eurocarparts with any discount codes

Yes this is classed as long life. You need VW 504/507 spec oil for long life and this will appear on the can. Been buying 5 litres for between £31 to £35.00. Need to be careful as now selling it in 4 litre cans for about the same price!! The Castrol professional is quite a bit more expensive.

A bit more info on long life oil if you want to read it:

LongLife oil is a high grade, fully synthetic oil with increased resistance to ageing at high temperatures. When LongLife servicing was originally introduced it was generally designated SAE 0W-30 and met Volkswagen standards 503 00 for petrol engines and 506 00 and later 506 01 for diesel engines. With the introduction of new emission limits for passenger cars in 2005 requiring the fitment of exhaust gas after-treatment devices, Volkswagen have upgraded their LongLife specifications to 504 00 for petrol and 507 00 for diesel. LongLife oils meeting 504 00/507 00 are now SAE 5W-30 viscosity. Apart from a few exceptions*, these new specifications replace the earlier 503 00/506 00/506 01 specifications. Oils meeting the new specifications are designed to work with the latest emissions control equipment, such as diesel particulate filters (DPF). Use of oil which only meets earlier LongLife specifications can halve the life of a DPF.

Important note
In order to maximise the life of the DPF, all DPF equipped Volkswagen vehicles (except pre 2006 R5 and V10 engines) must use an engine oil meeting the new 507 00 specification even when on Time and Distance servicing regime.

Salsajoe,

Are you saying that whether you use Castor Edge 5W 30 FST or Castor Edge 5W 30 Professional is just a preference thing and not based on whether you have time/distance or long life service regime?

Longlife oil can be used for both service regimes whereas "the lesser" oil can only be used on time & distance regime. In fact the majority of VW dealers use longlife oil for both regimes as tne norm.

I'm confused, how many litres do I need for the 1.4 TSI 160 engine? Is it 4 litres? And 5 litres is when you want an extra 1 litre in the bottle to top-off later?

EDIT: Looks like the oil capacity is 3.6 litres for this engine, so 4 litres should be more than enough.
