Confusing Oil Check ?

Post by drfluffhill1 »

Hi,
With the concern of overfilling by a few mm all too prevaillant and the owner's manual showing a different dipstick to the one on my new Scirocco gt, please excuse me for the following question ! Is the MAX mark at the top of the ridge, indicated in the photo, or should there be a clearly marked Max line next to where the actual word is ? Thank you for a quick reply and apologies again. Im so used to a line clearly marked MAX !

I've always taken it as being the ridge.

Thanks Cuprabob, thats what i assumed. I suppose the manual does say that but with a slightly differently shaped ridge ! It's amazing how the manual says how dangerous it is to overfill but then makes it not so obvious where the max line is ? Another amazing fact is how certain people on forums, especially in the usa, deliberatlely overfill by as much as 1/4 or even 1/2 quart ( 250-500 ml ) and its ok ! What are your thoughts on overfilling ? There's even talk of dipstick marks being possibly inaccurate and calibrating the dipstick based on how much oil is filled into the engine ! Phew !!

I think you would have to overfill by a fair bit before causing any damage. The manual is just covering their @rse. A few mm either way won't have much impact. The indications are conservative as designers have to build in a level of "idiot proofing"

Yeah, idiots like vw technicians that overfilled my engine with oil by about 5mm.
Also has anyone got any experiences with citygate Colindale, London? As I suspect that they have't changed the oil at all, just topped it up.
