Differences in TDI engines
Differences in TDI engines
Hello everybody,
This is my first post on the forum and typically it is a question!
I have been looking online and on the forum, but cannot find a clear answer to my question, is there a difference between the 140ps and the 170ps TDI Scirocco?
It is a case that VW have just "tuned up" the 140ps engine to reach 170ps or does the engine have physical changes such as a larger turbo, or bigger injectors? Also does anyone have the engine model numbers for each variant?
Thanks

Re: Differences in TDI engines
IIRC, the 170 has a bigger turbo, different injectors, different cam profiles and bigger brakes. Intercooler may be different too.

Hello White/Cupra,
Thank you very much for the confirmation, I now know what engine I'm going to get
Ta!

I've yet to hear a 170 TDI owner say "I wish I had bought the 140 TDI instead"

You may say that, I couldn't possibly comment:-)whiteDevil_170 wrote:But I've heard quite a few say " I wish I had bought a 170 instead"Cuprabob wrote:I've yet to hear a 170 TDI owner say "I wish I had bought the 140 TDI instead"

Re: Differences in TDI engines
However to put the 140 spin on things in my own inimitable style
60 to the gallon & £ 30 a year road tax & Walter is good for 130 (ish)
That said I get to drive fast for a living - if someone else was buying the fuel as per my work car I'd go for the R
Enjoy what ever you buy - the Roc is one of the most beautiful cars on the road - under the hood, well - meh!

I've owned both, the 140 is quick but the 170 will snap your neck

You must have a very weak neck:-)char wrote:I've owned both, the 140 is quick but the 170 will snap your neck

Re: Differences in TDI engines
Lol 74bhp from just a remap? Highly doubt it. Who was it mapped by? Let's put it this way. A 170 mapped by revo would take it to 212.kanedingle wrote:I've had my 140 mapped to 214 with a shed load of torque so pritty happy with that

Re: Differences in TDI engines
I had the 140 pd in an A3 and now the 170 CR in the Roc. Its a no brainer really as there isnt any price difference between really. Niether will snap your neck and DO not expect 200+ on a 140 with a remap as ive never heard of that on any 140 pd or cr. Only way you get them figures is hibrid turbs, decat/dpf etc... all i can say is im happy with mine and to be fair £130 a year tax is still cheap for what your getting when you look at a petrol varient with similar power/figures. not forgetting the good fuel consumption too up into mid 50's on a run. I understand the main difference is the turbo and injectors and is probably no doubt mapped slightly different to compensate for the changes.

Re: Differences in TDI engines
I had my 140 remapped to 184 by AMD Essex at Lakeside. Loads of torque and better acceleration.

Re: Differences in TDI engines
Yeh and gives you a very unrealistic output figure. I can't see how a simple remap can take your 140 to 214. A 170 would only just make that and it's got 30bhp up to start withkanedingle wrote:Map-tech vw specialist who writes all his own maps

Woo, hang on a moment no one asked if I had anything else done to it. Also you carnt argue with the rolling road figures before and after the map. Why are people on this forum so quick to judge and try and pick people apart?

Re: Differences in TDI engines
Is be interested to know what you've had done and more importantly spent. Seeing as you could have had that power output from a 170 with just a remap.

Re: Differences in TDI engines
Carnt I (sic)? I can. An unscrupulous rolling road operator can get his figures to say whatever he wants. I'll just start with ambient corrections for air temp, pressure and humidity in the cell on the day, what gear he selects for the "rundown correction", tyre pressures on the rollers. I'm sure there are many other fiddles.kanedingle wrote:Also you carnt argue with the rolling road figures before and after the map.
