New Scirocco - Geneva Motorshow

Post by Phil »

Afternoon All,

I was visiting my cousin in Geneva at the weekend and had a couple of hours to kill so decided to visit the motor show. Besides it being incredibly hot and crammed full of people it was really good to see some of the new cars expected soon. As you can imagine I spent alot of my time looking around the VW stand where the new Scirocco sat and thought id fill you in on whats its like.

I can't say I felt it was alot different. A few changes on the exterior design but still felt like the same general design. The rear of the car had new lights and re-shaped bumper which I looked really cool!

The front again had been re-shaped and new lights but it felt like the rounded well designed features from all of the current Sciroccos had been lost. It still looked very striking but nothing compared to the current R! The wheels new wheels didn't seem to suit the car for my liking and was probably the main let down in my eyes.

After a short wait I even got the chance to sit inside! It had a new steering wheel, new dials, re-shaped vents and a few extra dials up on the dash which are a nice touch! Although all these things were all very nice and made it all seem very modern, it was still the same seats and general setup as the current Scirocco.

It comes with the new more powerful engine which sounds like it will be very impressive. For me I wasn't massively impressed by it all as it didn't really feel all that different or new.

The car I really liked was the Golf R!

Thanks for sharing your impressions and photos, mate.

The Golf VII R looks like a great car, but the price was a little high for me. I did a quick config on VW's German site the other day and it was like 50K in Euro.
I hope the Roc costs a little less...

Yes - great pictures Phil and many thanks for sharing this. Yes - I think it has been said a few times now, I don't think anyone has been won over by the changes, it is a facelift after all but maybe not adventurous enough for us to consider changing.

As for the dials on top of the dash (sorry - have to mention again), I really don't like them, just look out of place on a sophisticated modern machine like the Scirocco. By all means pay homage to the original car, but I don't think we really wanted dials akin to that era!

I like the MK7 Golf GTI/R also, could be a tempter for me unless I wait for the next gen Scirocco in 2017!

I'm due to change my current R and had been waiting to see the 'facelift', talk about disappointment. Those dials on the top of the dash are just wrong. After much deliberation I've decided to look elsewhere. Let's see if there's an improved Roc in 2-3 years time. Here's hoping.

Does anyone know if the new non-R 's come with LED DRL's? I'm assuming the new R does since the existing one does, but what about the "ordinary" Rocs?

The normal rocco will have DRL in the lights, same like the r.

I see the Scirocco facelift as positive; I can keep my 2 year old low mileage Scirocco for a year or two more without it looking dated.
I too like the Golf R but a near standard spec 5 door car comes out at over £32k on the VW configurator which in my mind is too much for a Golf!

I can't believe they still haven't changed those god-awful plastic-insert creaky door handles. They are so cheap feeling and sounding.

Aluminium style touches are nice on the from of the golf R, don't think I'm a fan of the chrome stuff on other models. Silver wing mirrors a new thing like on Audi S?

Nothing to get excited about really. Personally I think I like the new look and can see where they have added some nice details exterior wise, unlike the Golf which they ruined! The Interior looks an odd way to go with the turbo and oil gauges, that's something you get in 90s Toyota not something for a 2015 VW. I like the new digital centre piece between the dials though, but not keep on the steering wheel.

Great pics! In a way I'm glad its not mind-blowingly awesome as I'd want want one straight away! kinda makes me want to keep mine for longer :)
