VW Recall

Post by lifeboatwill »

Hi guys, just wondered if these VW recalls are going to affect the scirocco. DSG boxes were mentioned in the press release I read but there were no other specifics.

Volkswagen is to recall 2.6 million cars worldwide due to various technical problems.

The German car giant, Europe's biggest car company, said potential faults have been found in different models.

The problems ranged from faulty lighting, leaky fuel pipes and incorrect gear oil, a spokesman said.

The recall includes 800,000 Tiguans built between 2008 and 2011.

The company said an electrical fuse failure may cause lighting failures on several different circuits.

Reports indicate that a further 1.6 million cars and vans are to be recalled over drive train issues.

What Car? editor in chief Chas Hallett told Sky News: "This is a big recall for sheer volumes of cars.

"But recalls happen all the time in the car industry and they're always done for safety or reliability issues."

VW is to replace the hi-tech synthetic oil used in dual-clutch gearboxes with traditional mineral oil.

It found that drives used in hot and humid areas such as in China and South East Asia are susceptible to electrical faults in stop-start traffic.

As a result, VW issued a global voluntary recall for all cars fitted with the seven-speed drives.

VW said: "To continue to ensure customer satisfaction ... Volkswagen has decided to launch global voluntary campaign.

"And to request all customers with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DQ200) filled with synthetic oil to visit a workshop for an oil exchange."

Around 250,000 pickups are also being recalled for repairs to the fuel system to prevent leaks.

Mr Hallett added: "In the end it won't harm Volkswagen and if you're an owner of one of the cars as long as you get the work done as soon as possible there's nothing to worry about."
Seems that the only potential threat to Rocs is the DSG oil change. Might be worth calling and getting it done early, though. It alludes to the fact that all customers with DSG will need it done.

Just saw it on the news yep. 7 speed dsg..that's me then.

On my last 7 speed dsg rocco in very hot weather I used to get a loud squeak on acceleration. I reported it to dealer but nothing ever came of it. I think this problem could possibly be related as it would logically be a gear change drop to accelerate.

This is what I have gleaned from our local reports
Reports are in today that Volkswagen Group is doing recalling 2.64 million vehicles across the world globally. The issues range from a simple electrical fix, to a potential fuel leak and a final fix for the troubled DSG gearboxes.

Of the total 2.64 million, a massive 1.6 million vehicles cars will be fixed for the DSG problem. The solution VW has found is to change the synthetic oil in the DS200 automatic to a mineral one.

According to the official statement, synthetic oil is responsible for causing short circuiting. This problem is especially bad in countries with humid and hot environment and where stop and go traffic is seen. But VW wants to fix every DS200, no matter the location, to "continue to ensure customer satisfaction".

"Within the framework of further quality monitoring in China and Southeast Asia, it has been discovered that, with vehicles with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DQ200), electric malfunctions could occur in the gearbox power supply if synthetic gearbox oil is used. This applies in particular if the vehicle is subject to a hot and humid climate, coupled with a high proportion of stop & go driving," Volkswagen Group states.

What models are affected? Well, lots… The DQ200 is a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox installed in the Golf, Jetta, Polo, Passat and Caddy. Previous recalls targeted only models built between June 2008 and September 2011, but this could be widened even further in the future. Sister models from SEAT, Skoda or Audi will also be affected by the call.

Identifying features
Recall Campaign number: 34F6
What are the defects?
Due to electrolysis in the gearbox, the sulphur constituents in the synthetic oil can separate off. These accumulations settle between the conductor paths of the electronics in the form of conductive particles and can therefore cause an electrical short circuit and the gearbox fuse could blow. Should this happen, the clutch will fully open due to power supply failure, causing the vehicle to roll to a stop if in motion.
What are the hazards?
In the majority of cases, the fault occurs when the engine is started with the vehicle stationary. If the fuse blows while the vehicle is in motion, however, a sudden loss of power at the wheels could in certain circumstances occur while the vehicle is being driven. This may pose a hazard to the vehicle occupants and other road users. All other functions of the vehicle (steering, braking, etc.) remain fully active.

For Bonnyfez

From my experience, a squeak on acceleration could be from the supercharger clutch. I had mine replaced twice (2009 Golf Mk 6 118TSI)

So far I have not heard anything yet. However, last winter mine had a 'software crash' on the control unit ( forgot the name of the component) and have to have a reset. it was over 300 pounds.

I doubt they will do any big recall in the UK. We are always gets shafted here.

There is no DSG recall here, I asked back in December if there were any but was given the answer that it is only certain climates/regions.

I was called by my VW dealer 2 days ago to take my R to service for a water pump recall because of some possible cooling problems on the engine. I have a MY2012.
