Aircon Whine Sound

Post by JakeH »

Anyone experienced this?
For the past few months I've had what I would describe as a sort of very noticable whine sound when I switch on the Aircon. I don't use the aircon much hence the reason I haven't had it into the dealers yet, but lately I've noticed a similar but much quieter sound from the engine even if the aircon is switched off. It's noticeable when the engine fires up and when the engine is idling, and you can clearly hear it when revving. It sounds as though it could be something like the noisey aircon fan that still turns even when the aircon is switched off? but it's quieter when the aircon is off if that makes sense. Does the aircon still operate in some way even if its switched off? Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this.

I have the same sounds that you're describing with my R. I haven't been too worried about it though.

Someone said to me in work today, "all aircon makes a sound". Can I just point out that this is not the normal aircon sound, this clearly sounds like something is wrong, it's really noticeable and sounds rough. it's only the fact that I've started to notice the sound now even when the aircon is switched off. Just trying to get it booked in to the dealers. Thanks for the reply CPD-SciroccoR, if I mange to get it sorted I'll update this post in case anyone else is interested.

Good luck with getting to the botom of it - it is a good idea to run the aircon at least once a week at all times of the year.....

Eventually managed to get the car into the dealers today. The verdict? Needs a brand new Air Con Compressor. Thank god for the warranty!

Indeed - that would probably be several hundred including labour.

Brand new compressor, drier and re-gassed. They quoted approx £500 parts and fitting - invoiced directly to the VW warranty. :)
It was due an aircon service too. Result!
