Economic driving style
Economic driving style
I just seem to be always filling my rocco up and im thinking its my driving style..
I dont drive fast at all and i dont accelerate quick. but im going through about 40 quids worth of fueld every 200 ish miles (that a guess im gonna log it properly next full fill)
going off the MPG display its best to be in 5th gear at 30mph and 6th anywhere from 40mph onwards... does this seem right? any other tips people can throw my way?

That seems a lot. I get 400 miles + out of 40 quid which about 38mpg average.sara_brea wrote:I just seem to be always filling my rocco up and im thinking its my driving style..

I'm very surprised with your economy, it's very bad, are you doing mostly town driving and short trips with the engine still cold?sara_brea wrote:I just seem to be always filling my rocco up and im thinking its my driving style..

I've got almost 400 miles on the clock in total. I filled up before the weekend and filled up with £40 after... and I got 300 miles exactly out of £40 over the weekend. It was combination of traffic and mostly motorway, doing about 80 on m/way and stop start in town.
One thing I have found is that there is very little travel on the accelerator pedal. A couple of times, I thought "ok, I'll put my foot down more", and then when you move your foot a bit more, you hit the bottom, since in fact it's almost already at the bottom!
Playing around, I can get decent mpg by hardly even touching the pedal, but then it accelerates very slowly, and is almost impossible to allow yourself to do!
I'm using DSG, In D mode, it seems to pull off in 2nd gear unless you put your foot down hard, it runs in 5th about 30, and 6th in 40, so seems to match your driving. In S mode, it uses lower gears and more revs.

Yes - £40 in 200 miles is not right, at around 90p per litre that is giving you around 20 mpg. I would say that 30mph in 5th gear is too high a gear, the engine could well be labouring at that point and using more fuel.
I know around town I can barely get out of 4th, I would not consider 5th until approaching 40mph and 6th late 40's.
My car is new so engine still running in, and trip computer is indicating around 33 mpg which is not too bad, but I would suggest you could be changing up the gears too quickly which is forcing the engine to labour, but even then 20mpg I would not expect, that is worse than my old RX-8. If it does not improve much, I would suggest taking it to the dealer, there could be a fuel leak (but unlikely).

Re: Economic driving style
I have done about 5.5k miles now. On average I get about 320 miles out of a tank and most of my weekly commute is a fast
20 miles on dual carriageway. On every trip manages at least 30 mpg, although 37mpg is achievable if I listen to a bit of classical music
(but that is not very often ).
I have even got up to 40 mpg on a 80 mile motorway trip where I cruised at 75ish all the way.
cheers

Re: Economic driving style
I'm in the same boat as stan_blade done around 5.5k - I get between 300-340 with every full tank, in the first few weeks of car ownership - I was very careful about over revving etc and I only got around 260-280 per tank.
<-- me when I stepped out my car this morning - when I left the house I was running 10mins late when I got to work I was bang on time

Re: Economic driving style
I went up to my parents last weekend which is exactly 160 miles away. I could probably have just about got back again on the same tank.
My predicted range is always on about 360 miles when I fill up and I think I'm getting around about that.

Re: Economic driving style
Over 2000 miles I've averaged just under 30mpg. Day to day I drive around town in traffic and tend to be fairly heavy on the juice pedal if a gap appears.
Full tank costs me about £46 for V-Power if I run it close to empty and that will do me 280-300 miles around town, or up to 350 if I have reason to do a decent motorway journey.
I think I'd have a hard time getting down to 200 miles from 40 quids worth of fuel even if I really tried!

If you cycle through the option of the MFD computer you should find an average MPG reading as opposed to the 'on-the-fly' one. What does this read?sara_brea wrote: I dont drive fast at all and i dont accelerate quick. but im going through about 40 quids worth of fueld every 200 ish miles (that a guess im gonna log it properly next full fill)
FYI I'm getting 28mpg in my Golf GTi (same engine but the Scirocco should be a couple of mpg more efficient) with pretty much exclusively town driving so if yours is less than that I'd be taking it back to the dealer and asking them to check it!
