Poor idling on 1.4 TSI

Post by carmanvw »

Hi there,
Can anyone tell me how well their 1.4 idles, while warmed up, etc. I'm a bit disappointed with mine, with just over 10,000 km on the clock, it hasn't the smooth idling I would have expected from a new VW. I had a Mk5 Golf for 6yrs, and idled perfectly till I traded it in, so I kind of expected the same.
I mentioned it to the main dealers service workshop when it was in for w different matter, and he reckoned its normal. With the stop start I didn't notice it for a good while, now it's bugging me. It's due a service in a couple of thousand miles, so I intend to have it looked at, but anyone able to enlighten me??

HI mine has just under 14000 mls on and coming up to its second service, and its always been very good on idle when warm, if a bit noisy when cold, so for a mechanic to say its normal for it to be sounding a bit noisy and I take it judder, I would want another mechanic to look at it. if it were me ok

Cheers,
Yeah, think you're right. Kind of limited when you're sticking with main dealers for the sake of the warranty. So I guess I'll itemise this problem and a couple of others when its in for the 1st service soon, and make sure I get a written copy of same. I'm more concerned about when it goes out of warranty and facing bills then.
Strangely, it doesn't ever cut out on the start/stop like my previous short lived roc.

my 1.4 has a rough idle at cold, but i expect this is due to spark plugs never having been changed in 55,000 miles! next service due in 800 miles so i'll be sure to get some new sparks. do you know if you have the recommended spark plug with the 0.7mm gap? If you search the forum you should find the related article by RW1 with all the info and part numbers. may be an easy fix as the sparks are only about £5 each.

hope this helps.

Yeah, RW1 (rip) did suggest that this could be the problem, and i think you could well be right, that thats the cause. I'm reluctant to mess with it myself while its under warranty.
I was fobbed off, I think at main dealers, but the car is almost due it's first service, (which makes it all the more disappointing, so I'll suggest the plug gap is checked, and written record of my complaint and subsequent analysis by the garage.
Limited number of main dealers to go to, as one group service about 5 or 6 different VW garages.
Cheers.
