Sat Nav's - nicked in midlands
Hi all,
First time poster; just took delivery of my Scirocco 2.0 TDI 2 weeks ago and had some friendly folk try to break into my roc last night.
Fortunately i rumbled them and they scarpered but not before i've had to have new glass on the passenger side, plus the hassle of insurance / cleaning up glass etc.
Local Police have said that thieves are specifically targeting Volkswagens and Audi's as they have common platforms. the integrated sat nav's are dead easy to nick apparently and install on other inferior models.
I've asked my dealer if they can change the NAV button on the console for a dummy button; will let you all know how i get on!
i hope no one else has experienced this; hoping that the cops catch the scum doing it too!

Really sorry to hear this. Some people are just scum and its unfair on us who work hard to buy ourself nice cars for people like that to just come along and nick it. This isn't the 1st satnav been nicked from a scirocco. There is a thread that someone started and had same problem. I'm sure is just a matter of removing the trim surrounding the unit and undo some torx screws then unplug the unit. It does seem to simple to do. An easy target for scum.

Re: Sat Nav's - nicked in midlands
thanks! seen some dutch thingy called a navilock, but photographic evidence of its effectiveness doesnt look so good... someone prized the cover off the thing and cracked the display
been doing research and it looks like VAG are one of the few car manufacturers who dont code their sat nav's to the vehicle they are installed in. hence by wife's brand new Qashqai (with integrated sat nav) was completely untouched as was my neighbour's Jag!
Going to see what response i get from the dealer, or i feel some letters to the automotive presss coming along to highlight this issue. judging by the number of posts in TT forums / here etc, there should be a groundswell of support to get this looked at by VAG!

They are coded - just checked in the manual. Once the unit is removed the unit wont operate in another vehicle unless the code is entered. The code must be obtained from VW, so the criminals would have difficulty selling them on.

thanks Skippy.
Quick update... Coppers are saying that they are dead easy to reset (reprog kit available to order from China!) the consoles and install in other models. So far my local VW dealer hasnt come back to me. that or i just had the misfortune to be targeted by thick opportunist scumbags!

Would changing the button on the unit make any difference? You'd still have 8 buttons as opposed to the RCD510's 6 buttons. Also, wouldn't the SD card reader be a give away?Ramjet wrote:Hi all,

Unfortunately I suspect any thief would already be in the car and removing the unit before they even had a glimpse to see if Nav is written on the button.

Re: Sat Nav's - nicked in midlands
VW stealers require the unit no and VIN but easy to get code for about £20.00 without questions. Nothing is ever thief proof. Some things just take longer to solve than others. While VW sell units for loads of cash a second hand £400 RNS 510 on ebay looks good value unfortunately. Not sure how to improve protection apart from locking the car away.
Re: Sat Nav's - nicked in midlands
codes are more difficult to obtain from the dealer now (vin, serial number and v5)
however there is a tool that can make a new pin code (RNS manager, which also does Video-in-motion)

I agree, they can easily change the pin with a new one...Eddie-NL wrote: however there is a tool that can make a new pin code (RNS manager, which also does Video-in-motion)
