I don;t know how relevant is this but i thought to share my experience with you all.
For a while i was not happy about the sound quality of my MP3 player when i plugged it into the car's USB socket . Or specifically the sound broadcasted by the car's speaker.
I accept the music files were varied in quality in the first place, but they sound so different when i play the same using the headphone supplied.
I just could not reproduce the same depth of bass using just the music settings on the car's stereo.
Then in a eureka moment, i plugged the mp3 player to the aux socket using a 3.5mm cable with male fittings at both ends.
What a change! The music sounded exactly as it sounds via the headphone.
The disadvantage is you have to control the music and the player manually. The car radio only allows the control of volume as it only transfers sound, not data. So no song names on the MFD.
not very convenient but worth it for the sound quality alone.

Re: MP3 sound quality
Check the AUX input level. The option is under Setup -> Media -> AUX input level
Mine was set to Level 3 and the sound quality was terrible. Changed it to Level 1 and there was a massive improvement. I think I am on Level 2 now and the quality is CD
