Xenon adjustment and auto leveling

Post by Grande »

It used to be that whenever I came to a complete stop, the xenon headlights whould drop down slightly and then come back up as soon as I started driving again.

Now I had them adjausted higher with the screw and what happens is they no longer drop lower when I stop, instead they do the opposite: higher when stopped, lower when driving (but this time very, very slightly).

So it seems to me, the screw adjustment only works when the car is not moving bacause as soon as you start driving auto leveling overrides the screw setting. Is that correct?

As I understand it the Xenons are adjusted using vagcom / vcds and not manually using the screw.

You can adjust Xenons with the screw. I adjusted mine as I felt they were sitting too low. I did them too high at first and the auto levelling didn't drop them back down when driving.

Then what's the point of having the screws?

In fact you may be right and I suspect the screw adjustment is only to pass an inspection (such as annual vehicle safety tests). But it only sets the resting xenon position. Auto leveling independently takes over when the car is in motion (and that can probably be further adjusted using vagcom).

I can definitely tell that the headlights have a separate resting height and another for driving. You can test by doing a slow stop and go (so that the car doesn't wobble). So yes, now my xenons are higher - but only when I'm stopped. Well at least it sure looks like it.

Perhaps they need set for driving whilst on a Dyno as from the factory. It must have a memory for auto-level yet I thought it was supposed to calculate a new one because of the different loads you may have at times. I never noticed a dipping at stops.

Here's a thread about MK6 Golf with lots of info:

According to that, there are two ways in which you can adjust:
1. screws
2. VCDS (VAG-COM) - auto-adjustment, without touching the screws
But I don't know if this applies...
