Apple iOS 6.1 issues with sound

Post by col_85 »

Hi there,

Just wondering has any one else been experiencing any issues with sound since upgrading to iOS 6.1? I have tried connecting my iPhone 3GS and iPad 3 via both the MDI cable and AUX input however there is noise throughout any song played and the bass is completely flat. When i connect my Samsung Galaxy S3 via the AUX input it works perfectly however. The radio and cds play completely fine by themselves. It's a pain because i would rather use the iPhone simply as an mp3 player now which remains in the car. I regret upgrading from iOS5 and of course its not possible to downgrade officially though i have attempted jail breaking it to iOS4 but it made no difference.

Any suggestions as to what i can try? My Scirocco is a 2011 model and it's the RCD-510 stereo.

Thanks in advance,

I have a MY2010 and RCD510 - I recently ungraded to ios6.1 and have absolutely no issues. There is a new update as of yesterday (ios6.1.2), so maybe try that?
It's almost impossible to downgrade except you have a jailbroken phone with saved SHSH blobs (or whatever they call them). My phone is jailbroken and I have no issues with the upgrade with that (with regards to sound output) either.

The AUX input is just the headphone output from your iphone etc. If there is a problem with the iphone then it should sound just as bad through a pair of headphones. Try it.
It doesn't sound like its your RCD510 as its OK with your Galaxy. If the update to 6.02 doesn't fix it then it might be worth a trip to your local Apple store to see one of their geniuses.
Have you got access to a docking station where you can test the 30 pin output?
Google search for sound issues with the 6.1 update - you might not be the only one.
Keep us posted.

Many thanks for the replies. Had a go playing the music through headphones and it plays perfectly. I also have the USB MDI cable and it plays fine so I know it's not the input connection in the car. I could understand if only my iPhone didn't work but the fact that my iPad 3 doesn't work really throws me. I also have an iPad 2 for work which I've tested and it doesn't work either, not that I would be using the iPads' anyway I just wanted to test them. I've looked on Google for 2 weeks but can find nobody with this issue. I also had a look on Youtube but nothing. My friend thought potentially it might have something to do with frequencies but that means nothing to me. I got my car serviced by VW last Friday 15/02/13 hoping there would be some update from VW but no such luck. I also bought a new Apple MDI cable.

I just updated to 6.1.2 there but still no difference.

Any other suggestions or any one with any idea of how to adjust frequencies (if even possible) or anything else, please if you wouldn't mind sharing your expertise.

Many thanks,

Well you've obviously explored all the usual causes. Bit of an odd one this.
Have you checked Settings > Music on your iphone in case its been changed. On mine Sound Check, Eq and Volume Limit are all off.
There have been sound quality issues before where the volume on the input device is too high or too low.

Thanks ZephyR, had a look and my setting are the exact same as yours. Yes it really is strange and the fact that I can find nobody else with the same problem. I have read about people having general sound issues with iOS6 with sound not even working, but nobody seems to be experiencing any issues with sound into their car.

Yes it a real pain, I was starting to think I was the only one. I still have not solved this problem, tried everything I can think of and followed advice from this thread also.

Try resetting your iPhone.

1.Reset the iPhone by holding the sleep/wake button at the top right of the device and the home button at the bottom center of the face at the same time.
2.Hold them both until you see the screen go black. In some cases, you may need to keep holding them even after the red power off slider appears. If it does, just keep holding it.
3.Wait until the white Apple logo appears.
4.When this happens, you can let go - the iPhone is rebooting.

Thanks for the replies. I've tried both iTunes and Spotify, it's actually Spotify that i use in my car. Regarding the phone reset, i've already tried rebooting the phone and i have also done a factory reset but still no difference. :-(

That's a really good point I will try that out to see if it helps. However I have solved getting the music to play back through the iPhone earphone jack by doing a software update to my RCD510. My friend found this VW website which contains updates for a few devices including the RCD510 - http://87.230.74.92/ci_softwareupdates00.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So via the AUX input the sound is now fine thankfully, but it still sounds poor via the Apple MDI cable, but I will try what Ørjan has said, many thanks!!

Problem solved!!! :-) Rather simple in the end though it's something I never even thought would affect the input of the MDI cable, my AUX Input Level in the RCD510 Settings was set to High, so I changed it to Medium and that completely fixed the distortion. Happy days!!! Many thanks for all help given,it was very much appreciated!!

That's where I was trying to steer you in an earlier post although I didn't give much detail. Glad its all sorted  But how did updating your IOS on your iphone and ipad change the setting on the RCD510

That's a really good question, the iOS update couldn't have done that, it must have been coincidental and either I or someone else has accidentally changed that setting without realising. :?
