is my nav working? (update useless VW)
Hiicked up my car today and have been playing around with the nav system, mainly with the car parked on my drive. Thing is when i put in a random destonation, lets say -London and the press start the system keeps displaying a message similar to "unable to reccomend a route to this destination".
I am sure a 1200 quid nav system could calculate a route from durham to london? thing is, am i being thick or is it not working correctly? Ther gps certainly seems to be working as my position moves when i drive around??

i have noticed that the hard drive already had about 16gb of info on it ? will this be the nav data already pre loaded?

Re: is my nav working? or am i thick?
your dealer should have supplied you with a DVD of european maps - if they haven't i'd get on to them. I had to chase my dealer, i think they hang onto them so they can sell them. If it helps i can do a copy (i think) and mail one to you?
The best way of checking your hdd is to see how much space is available on it - if the dvd has been installed it should only have 18gb free out of th 30gb.
hope this helps, nick

Re: is my nav working? or am i thick?
read your manual mate, its long winded but the info is in there. Its pretty easy once you get to know it, the only downside being it only allows the first 4 characters of a postcode though I always get to where I am going and use it a hell of a lot (12500 miles already and go to new places every week as I am field based)
Taken delivery : Silver, DSG, NAV, Black Leather, Park Sensors, Winter pack.

Re: is my nav working? or am i thick?
right i still cant get the bloody thing to direct me! the data is there so for example if i sit on my drive and use points of interest to select "THE STADIUM OF LIGHT" which is about 20 miles away it appears on the map. However when i press the route button the system still says "THERE ARE NO ROUTE RECCOMENDATIONS FOR THIS DESTINATION"
Why is it doing this? it clearly knows where it is??

Sounds like you might have a GPS problem, does your NAV appear to know where you are? It could be that it can't calculate a route because is doesn't know where it is starting from which could mean there is a problem communicating with the GPS antenna.

Well that's positive at least, might be worth trying to reload the maps but if you don't have the DVD then obviously this is a problem.insanojackson wrote:it seems to know where i am, it displays my position on a large map, but that map doesnt display any roads etc.jonallen628 wrote:Sounds like you might have a GPS problem, does your NAV appear to know where you are? Re: is my nav working? or am i thick?
You should have been given the disc. Mine was actually left in the disc drive above the nav unit...have you checked that it's not in there?? My dealer also gave me the DVD box for the disc which had a supporting guide DVD on using the system...I have now ejected the disc and popped it in the box as it isn't necessary to keep it in there any more...see below...
As has been said, when the disc is loaded, the system will soon copy the info across from the disc to the HDD, which it sounds like yours has done, given the drive capacity. If the nav isn't showing streets, there may well be a problem with the system itself, or the copy of the info across from the disc. If, however, you mean that it isn't showing the street names against all streets visible, that depends on what magnificantion level you have the system at (changed by twiddling the right hand main knob on the unit).
It's difficult to be more helpful without being there and seeing it. If it definitely isn't working then I'd pop back into the dealer and ask them to check it out.

Re: is my nav working? or am i thick?
Are you sure there is a problem?
The phrase 'unable to reccomend a route to this destination' might just mean that it has no preference for a route?, it will probably still guide you there. Try the same with somewhere closer, and see if the same message appears?

been to the dealers today, they tried to re load the disk which resulted in total failure of the nav and hdd function, New system on order!
