Written off car

Post by Gt12 »

Someones just pulled into my car on a junction, waiting for rac to pick it up. When they wrote it off, will I have to wait 6 months for a new one again?

Bloody hell! Hope you are ok!?!
If it comes to writing off & a factory order then they may be able to fast track it but will depend on the clout the insurer has imo

Aye, possible broken hand but nothing that's worrying me as much as my £1k excess.

That's a high excess!!!!

Shouldn't have to pay it though if the other driver is insured.

Yeah, well I know I can drive, so I didn't intend crashing myself... whether I have to cough up with the other driver being at fault im not sure?

It's so high, as it kept the overall insurance low.

Sorry to hear about the accident, I know feeling, had a roc written off last year myself. :( Hope you are alright and you get it sorted.
I think you have to pay the excess initially but then you/insurance company claim it back from the other drivers insurance once they have decided who was at fault.

Oh I just wanted to add one thing that I learnt from experience last year. Go to the yard they take the car to as soon as you can, before they decide whether its written off or not - get everything out of it... E.G. CDS/Mats/Cables for iPod everything you can, because my car was basically looted as soon as It got taken to the salvage yard and it really added insult to injury and it would be horrible to hear it happen to someone else! Also if it is written off you can sell this kinda stuff/put it in your new one.

Hope it isn't written off and you get the 'Roc back! Good Luck! :)

Hello GT 12. What an unfortunate thing to happen to you and your Rocco. May I offer you some advice regarding the insurance? The point at which the insurers write the car off is when the cost of repairs(and sundry costs such as towing, storage and provision of a hire car), exceed 70 percent of the current value of the car. This is where in my personal experience with another make of car,the shenanigans starts. I my case, I had a four month old car written off. The insurers tried to INCREASE the deemed value of the car, right into the face of a sworn appraisal, provided to me just a month earlier(I was going to change the car for a better specced model.)Their rational was that by "inflating" the value the quantum of 70 percent of the value increased the "write off point" quite a lot. I must add at this stage that the dealers and the insurance company's loss adjuster had a lovely scheme running for themselves. The dealer owned the only "approved" panel beating shop around and stood to make more money out of repairing the car than selling or replacing me with a new car. The loss adjuster was in on it too by getting a kick back from the dealer. I do not know the state of damage to your car, but in my case I was told it was "largely superficial" and therefore "safely repairable." My attitude was that my policy was bound to" place me in the same position I was immediately prior to the accident." I told them that I was prejudiced as follows
1) No matter how perfect the repair may have been, commonsense told that a car that had been forced off the freeway at 120 kph(4 airbags were deployed), could never be the same again,
2)I would have to declare the damage, if it was repaired and I later sold it and that would guarantee a lower price on the car.
I called in my attorneys and one or two letters later, I received a letter from them desperately trying to undo the damage that they had got themselves into along with a Certificate of Total Loss.
The moral is do not trust anyone but yourself and your instincts. You know your car well and are excellently placed to take these kind of decisions. The Rocco is to be considered a high performance vehicle and any kind of repair that undermines the car's integrity should not easily be considered.

Luckily it seems I was too stressed to properly check the damage and my Step Dad reckons most of the damage is superficial, however as the drivers side front wheel took the brunt of the damage it'll obviously need to go into a workshop and get fully checked out. A few panels away from the damage to appear to have been slightly shunted, but I'll have to wait and see how bad it is I guess. The speed of impact wasn't too high, simply the size of the other vehicle... a Volvo X90.

It's booked in for pickup tomorrow, so hopefully won't take too long to get that side sorted. In the mean time, it looks like I'm getting a Golf GTD - DSG as the replacement vehicle, but going to confirm that tomorrow.

So far Chruchill haven't heard from the other guys insurance, but are contacting them themselves to see if they'll challenge it. If they do, I have a witness - passing pedestrian and also an image of where it happened, clearly showing that it was the other cars fault. I'll get that pick up here at some point too.

Ironically, I rushed back to my car after the football match I had been too, because I didn't particularly trust it in the city centre and then 5 minutes later someone else crashes into me lol.
