R Engine Knackered

Post by sciroccorocket »

well driving home the other my R engine started making a noise that I can best describe as sounding like a hammer drill, after the dealer had it a week i get call to say its swarf in the fuel pump and as the don't know where its come from VW have decided to fit a new engine and as they have never fitted an R engine before there's none in the UK so its a special order from Germany so thats another week to 10 days

Is your car mapped? They check the cam follower?

Is there an issue with the cam followers on mapped engines? Maps don't raise the rev limit so I don't see how it could effect?
RS5, Scirocco R. You can never have enough R's

My car is re-mapped with GIAC software and i can hear this noise. Should the cam follower be replaced when doing a re-mapp?

I've just talked to the company who fixed GIAC on my car. Its normal that TSI engines get this "diesel" engine sound when having them tuned.
Don't know if this is the same sound as you have, (almost like a engine running on low oil). But thought i should write it here if anyone else starts to hear this.

I think there's a significant difference between a 'hammer drill' and and the nature of a direct injection petrol. Map or no map, all 2.0 TFSI's sound the same unless the cam tensioner is shagged.

Shame to hear about the engine by the way, I'll be swapping the cam follower over this weekend.

The sound is not as clear as from a diesel. But you clearly hear a similar sound, especially at idle. But this would clearly be quite normal for tuned 2.0 TFSI engines.

Of course there's a difference, but i just took this up because some wrote and wondered if the engine was tuned, and only wanted to reply with my info i got. I can clearly hear a difference between mine and a orginal R, and as the my dealer says, its totally normal when tuning these engines.

If this would be a normal injection sound, i've never heard a clear one as this before!

But the diesel sounds doesn't come from the exhaust.

Or can you tell which kind of engine their is only by judging the sound from the exhaust? ;)
