Thumping like sound from passenger side
Hello Roc enthousiasts!
I recently spotted a weird sound that my roc is making. When I slowly accelerate from 2nd to 3rd gear (around 30 kmh) or slowing down to 2nd gear, a thumping like sound is produced that can be also slightly felt from the pedals. The sound is seems to be concurrent with the movement of the tires, meaning that for each wheel spin the thump sound is heard. Most weird thing about this, is that it comes and goes - so when I decided to take it to the dealership, it was not as loud as it was, or could not be heard at all!
Checked the tyres, pressure is as it should (I have the pressure indicator installed as well) and also did not notice any stones or other objects stuck on them...
Please for your comments! Any idea or guess will be much appreciated
Thanks in advance

Re: Thumping like sound from passenger side
Hello guys,
Went to the dealership, went for a ride with one mechanic. He said the sound is due to uneven tyre wear...they tried to bring the front tyres back, and viceverca. But they discovered tha the read left 18" interlagos rim is crooked at some way and I have booked an appointment to straighten that out as well...

Re: Thumping like sound from passenger side
Hello everyone,
Following my previous post, I changed the tyre that was damaged with exaclty the same tyre, Pirelli P Zero Cinturato (seal inside).
Expected for the thumping sound to go away, but it's still there
Please, anyone with any suggestion?
Thanks

Re: Thumping like sound from passenger side
If it isn't wheel or tyre related, could it be a loose or misaligned brake component - calliper or ABS sensor maybe? Or a slightly warped disc making contact with something it shouldn't?

Re: Thumping like sound from passenger side
Hello fifer,
Thx for ur response. I am not sure that it won't be related to the tyres. The one tyre that had a visible problem was replaced...
I've read somewhere else about tyre's broken belts and that they may not be visible? Anyone familiar with this?

One way to rule out wheel or tyre is to swap the front wheels round and see if the thump changes sides (definitely wheel or tyre) or stays put (definitely not wheel or tyre).

Re: Thumping like sound from passenger side
Hello everyone,
Took it once again to the tyre shop. The tyre guy told me that the noice I hear is obviously coming from the tyres after we took the scirocco for a ride. He hand-checked the tyres after and said that due to the tyres being of such low profile (really "sporty" as he said) they wear more than other tyres. Also that the sound is natural since I have them on for nearly 24000 km. I felt the tyre as well, and it felt like "stairwell" wear of the front especially tyres.
The tyres are the ones that were shipped with the car: Pirelli P Zero Rosso Cinturado (Seal inside) 235/40 R18. I expect that some other sciroccos must have been shipped with the same tyres. Has anyone experienced anything like this?
Thx in advance

Re: Thumping like sound from passenger side
Those tyres are far from low profile - if the tyres were to blame then this would be affecting every standard Scirocco sold with 18" wheels.
Sounds like they're just spouting absolute tosh tbh...

I would guess it's another description for the uneven "sawtooth" type wear you sometimes get on the rear.RW1 wrote:What do you exactly mean by this? Any photo?egwaytos wrote: and it felt like "stairwell" wear of the front especially tyres.

Re: Thumping like sound from passenger side
Thats what I was thinking so just wanting to confirm. If it is......
i) front toe values are too high (any front suspension work been done like new springs and shocks or has a kerb been hit hard to bend a track rod)
ii) tyre pressures are incorrect (mis-interpretation of the tank flap pressures or faulty tyre pressure guage being used.)
iii) very fast cornering (speaks for itself, maybe a lot of track circuit driving)
are the usual causes.
Bent suspension/steering.

Re: Thumping like sound from passenger side
Have you tried swapping the wheel with the suspect tyre to the other side to see if the noise moves with it?

Hello everyone and thanks for ur responses!
Haven't swapped the tyre because I don't know if this is possible since from what I know tyres have rotation direction...
As far as it concerns the other suggestions, I don't know much technical stuff, can I check it for myself for broken /bend absorbers or all the others that u guys suggest(apart from the tyre pressure which is simple)? Because the dealership tends to be really indifferent when it concerns cars that are still under warranty...

Re: Thumping like sound from passenger side
What tyres are on it as most tyres are Asymmetric these days which means there is is no issue swapping them around.all that matters is they are mounted on the rim the correct way.
Easy way to tell is directional tyres have an arrow on the sidewall and Asymmetric tyres have the word "outside" on the sidewall.
