DRLs

Post by morrissey »

Anybody got any info on these?

I heard a rumour that DRL's are std on all UK spec cars - are the switchable or is it ignition on=DRLs on ?

Where are they - I am guessing in the lower grill as part of the front indicator lense?

Cheers

You are correct. The DRL's are standard on UK cars. They come on when ignition is switched on and are the sidelights and dipped headlights.
I believe that you can only have them turned off at the factory at point of order.

I think I read somewhere that daytime running lights (for those who don't know what DRLs are :D) will be standard on new UK cars from 2010 anyway. There seem to be some fierce campaigns against it though.

I'd be very surprised if this isn't selectable in the convenience module with a vag-com lead (or even in the 'convenience menu' from the steering wheel)

If the DRL's are side lights and dipped beams, then whats the point in having the auto lights? If theyre always on, then surely they cant be automatically turned on???Im confused :(

JonR356, possibly with a vag-com,but when I asked the dealer they said only available at time of ordering. I have gone through the MFD and there is nothing in there to turn them off.

owen316, the front lights come on but not the rears in the Auto setting the dash lights are activated as well.

Why would you want to switch them off anyway? You're much more visable and hence safer with them on.The Bikers don't ride with their lights on all the time foir nothing..So,you can see where i stand on it anyway,i'm all for it.

Bikers have them on because of being much smaller and easily missed. There are some groups against it becuase of extra fuel being used

You may have to replace the bulbs more often. Not only is there the cost of a bulb which might be minimal some new cars require the bumper and other parts to be removed to gain access which will be either time consuming or expensive if you take the car to a dealer.

Bikers are against DRLs because if all cars have them then the bikes loose the advantage.

Interesting,i can see how a biker might be at a disadvantage in certain situations, like riding between lanes of stationary traffic, they might stand out less in your mirrors and more likely to change lanes on them.On the other hand, there are definately situations where it improves safety and visability too, bikes need to be able to see cars aswell.I waqsn't aware of this legislation,or of there being a debate about it,we probably can't figure it out either,i assume it'll go on accident statistics and stuff.'looked but didn't see' accidents are very common though, and DRLs seem likely to reduce it,that or viper green paint maybe. That's another thing, maybe gray cars shgoulkd be banned

The wearing out the bulbs thing, not sure about that personally,i mean that can work the other around way too,if someone doesn't pull out in front of you and therefore you don't smash the front end of your car in because you had your lights on then there's a pair of bulbs saved :D

Had this discussion with my dealer, and the outcome was that once they have been switched off at factory the setting can’t be reactivated, also I believe it will be law for all car manufacturers to fit this to all cars as of 2010!

Not sure how much truth there is in it but that is what I was told, to be honest the scirocco is quite a low car so helping the HGV drivers out by letting them know I am there is only a good thing in my book
Car is now Sold!!!!! BMW 7 Series for now as nice and big but holding out for something a little special as my toy :)

Its easy to recode it on the MK5 GTI

I'd be surprised if the VW dealer is of any help at all - they generally dont have a bloody clue how to do stuff with the electronic modules.

I don't like the DRL, dealer told me also that once they have been turned off they can't ever be turned back on.
