Swapping RCD 510 for RNS 510

Post by marchhare101 »

Hi all. i own a GT 2.0 at the moment but tomorrow i am picking up a lovley R. Cant wait. I have two problems. The garage i am buying from is swapping the rcd 510 in the R for my rns 510 which i need for satnav etc. They told me they just need to install a new antenna at a cost of £100 behind the unit. Is this right and why cant they just take the antenna from my GT as the sharkfins are just dummy's i think. Also my other concern is will the optical parking sensors work on the R after the swap. The R has parking sensors built in so is it as simple as just plugging it in and they will work? I hope this hasn't been covered already. i have looked for an answer to no avail, Thanks in advance.

Do you have an antenna already ?, is the RNS in your old car from the factory or did you retro fit it ?, the optical sensors will work as long as they program the unit properly.

Surely there must be an antenna already built in for the RNS510. Why can't they use that ?
Unless .... are you getting one with DAB already installed ? In which case I think the DAB antenna is those wires in the rear side window, which might also serve for AM / FM.

Antenna: It is part of the wiring loom and goes to the roof shark fin, if it is OEM. When retrofitting a satnav, the only option is to install a new antenna, preferably in front of the RNS510.

Park sensors: If the parking sensors are OEM, then it is just a matter of coding the RNS510 to know that they are installed.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. In the end it went smoothly. The sensors work fine and they installed an antenna in the pillar. The dealer was telling me fibs about the shark fin being a dummy, as I spoke to the tech who fitted the rns 510. He said it was too big a job to fit a new cable and antenna to the new cars fin. Anyway the nav works fine. Thanks again.
