had mine disabled for a couple of months, in reality i use the side lights nearly all the time at the moment instead as visable put not head light bright, easily turned back on by a dealer

unfortunately we have to legislate for the masses, pitty they can't do something for the fog light f#ck wits on our roads

I had been careful not to mention Fog Light Users, as I'd thought they'd be the same people who are in favour of DRLs. Seems I'm wrong....

I'm with the posters above, Fog Lights are for when it's Foggy, the clue's in the name. If you can see the car in front then you don't need your front fogs on. If you can see the car behind then you don't need your rear fog lights on. I think the inappropriate use of rear fogs is more dangerous than fronts, as they make brake lights less visible.

And as for using them in rain!? Think about what you're doing!

I also hate drivers that have their fogs on constantly.

When it's extreme rain, (e.g. monsoon like) I will forgive people for putting the rears on, as visibility can be as bad as thick fog. I would not do it though, and as soon as the weather changes to say just heavy/normal rain then they should be turned off.

Personally I don't understand the whole issue with DRLs and I have no problem with them.

As a biker im both used to having them on and appreciate the advantages of increased visibility. If it stops some muppet from pulling out in front of me then great.

Bit puzzled why people don't want DRLs but then switch their side lights on.

Not having a go at those who have had the lights switched off just don't see the problem myself.

My thoughts exactly not coming from bikes but frequently driving a Westfield so understand the need to be visible to other drivers

Booked into the dealer tomorrow (Wednesday). I'll let you know if they are successful in turning them off.

If your dealer manages it, could you ask what they did so I can "help" my dealer?

What's the problem with DRLs? I think the car looks "dead" without DRLs. If I see a car on the road without DRLs it doesn't look as cool as my Xenons for sure!

Anyways, they have been required by law in Norway since 70's or something.

I think it's a weather thing - in the winter I don't see a problem with the DRLs
In high summer it seems a bit incongruous over here - just my two penn'uth

i turned my drl's off, as they look poop compaired to the xenons

Well they didn't manage it due to the code being blocked (?), but they are contacting VW to try and get a solution.

Also, they asked me to get the name of a dealership that had managed it and they would contact them to see how they did it - anyone?

Three and a half hours with the dealer this afternoon. Several eMails to and from VW UK and Germany. And the damn things are still switched on!

They've said that later build cars can't have the DRLs switched off. There was a proposed fix, but this was a once only thing, and it "might" also turn off "coming home", and might stop the lights working alltogether. If it did, I would be liable for repair cost.

I think I'm being messed about.

I have my ear close to the ground and you arent being messed about mate, VW dont want people to turn the DRL's off and so they have made some changes to the software. Sorry

Thanks for the inside track, but it doesn't make me any happier.

If VW wanted DRLs they should have fitted them, rather than just turning the whole lights system on all the time.

The handbook should not say how to turn DRLs off, and then not do what it says. The dealer should not say they can turn DRLs off, and then find they can't. VW should not say you can turn them off, but it "might" damage you car, and you're liable. The placing of a higher hurdle at each stage has really annoyed me.

There's no legal requirement. If I really wanted to be an idiot I can drive round in the dark with manually selected side-light (on the otherwisw useless light switch) and the car does nothing to over-ride my stupidity. Allow the autolights to do what they're supposed to and people will use them.

Rant over. I think. For the moment...

Are the DRL's different on cars with Xenon's then? As my car only puts the spots on closest to the grill, as seen in pic below. I saw on this thread that the main light is on?
