what petrol you using ?

Always Shell Optimax or something above 98 as stated on the fuel cap unless I'm unable to find it. I think I've put standard 95 in two times since owning the car, one of those was around a month and a half ago. Oil/Water levels all checked, in fact went in to have the dreaded boot rattle fixed (which has now reared its head again) a month ago and had a full health check by VW.

Yeah that's what I was kind of hoping it was. Maybe thinking of running it on a couple more tanks of Optimax just to be doubly sure that there is absolutely nothing else in the system.

May be worth getting someone with VCDS to do some logging for you. Boost, timing pull and fuel pressures will probably highlight a lingering issue. it may also be worth search on mk5golfgti.co.uk for any similar issues and the root causes.

Maybe a worn diverter valve?not sure if they improved this in R, but i know i had that problem in my MK5 GTI and have some mates who had the same problem in the MK6 GTI. Perhaps you should put the car on the dyno if no logging problems/fault codes are raised by VCDS? Then it'll confirm tht your car is actually losing power...

Driven it yesterday and today and the problem seems to disappear when the car has been run for a while at full temperature. However today just after reaching 85 degrees on the oil floored it in 3rd and got very non linear power delivery with what I can only describe as a back firing noise from the exhausts. I have tried measuring parameters using the application however it only measures every 0.1 secs and I have no idea what sensors to monitor.

Any ideas?

Sorry not sure which sensor to check. Best to do a full scan with VCDS and check which fault codes is generated. Once you got the code then you can check the ross-tech wiki for more info.

The R now comes with the latest revision DV (i.e. solenoid) so I'd rule out the DV. Like I said, get someone with VCDS to log you car on a short run, that Torque app thing isn't going to tell you anything useful. You want fuel pressures (HP & LP), boost and timing etc, it could be something as simple a coil pack on the way out. I take it you haven't had a look on the forum that I put, you'll be surprised by the amount of useful info on the forum....

I've also run the car monitoring the fuel pressure and ignition timing and have screenshots which I'll post up soon. Unfortunately I don't know enough to see what looks normal so possibly getting out of my depth. I have a feeling I'm just going to have to get an engineer to sit in the car with me, see the fault occurring and then leave it with them until they find out what is wrong.

The above fault codes aren't going to be linked to the engine issue. You want to log the data and export it to excel and plot it, you'll get a decent ideal of whats going in terms of requested/supplied fuel pressures, boost etc. Failing that, get on the blower to VW and get them to do the leg work.

You are quite right, neither fault is related...

01038 - Central Locking Thermal Protection, probably trigger during the winter when the door locks were frozen while attempting entry. At about 7,490 miles on the odometer.

01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded, probably the fitting of a phone or its removal and the CANBUS is or wasn't tidied up during setup or removal at 5,125 miles.

For a fault like this, the fuel pump comes into question. There have been some on the 2.0TSi, not R, that have been below par. The pump wears so they've updated it with a hard coating on the parts.

It would normally have a fault code 16471 - Fuel Rail Pressure low. Maybe not gone far enough yet on this one.

Just thought I should let everyone know the outcome, I think that the stuttering must have been caused by swapping between 95/98 RON at some point (although I seldom do that) or fuel contamination. Ran the tank empty, then have been filling up constantly with either optimax or ultimate and the problem has totally disappeared. Car has just been serviced also and no problems found. I would even go to say that the car is feeling quicker than it has ever felt before so I am a very happy R owner again!!

Oh, glad you're sorted, I once went through the same with my MK5 gti and it was found to be the fuel.

And although the DV is sorted on the R the PCV system is still dodgy which can cause very similar issue

Apologies for bringing this up again, however the problem has risen again but even worse. To give a bit of history this is what has happened so far:

1. Have only used Shell Optimax, BP Ultimate and Tesco Momentum 99 in the car.
2. Last tank was Tesco Momentum 99 fuel, about 2/3 full.
3. Flashing engine fault light for around 5 secs first time, around 15 secs second time.

The car is now booked in tomorrow. Originally they said they couldn't get a support car until the 7th which I refused and now they are giving me a hire car. They have been very good about this.

Does anyone have any idea what is going wrong with my engine. I upgraded to this car due to having misfires in the 1.4 and now I'm getting them in this. Could this be a fuel contamination problem in my area??

Coilpacks? Try changing coilpacks around, i.e. 1 to 4 and see if the problem follows. Coilpacks seem to be one of the weak links in the TFSI.

Spoke to them this evening, and they have replaced coil pack one. They took it for a test drive and it continued to stutter. The engineer told me that they have now taken out the spark plugs and replaced them and they were heavily fouled - not too sure why?? Anyway he's going to test drive it again tomorrow and see if its fixed.

Not good at the moment as I have a track day booked for Snetterton on Thursday, and MSV have refused to give me any money back or credit. Oh joy.
