Top Gear Triple test: Veloster vs Astra GTC vs Scirocco

Post by rococco »

Top Gear magazine features a comparison of the Hyundai Velostar, Opel/Vauxhall Astra GTC, and our own beloved VW Scirocco to nominate their best inexpensive coupe.

Presumably with the objective of keeping the cars to a similar price range they reviewed the entry-level 122bhp Scirocco, which strongly influenced their overall opinion of it. Pity, as I think had they considered a more powerfully equipped 'roc it would have easily outmatched even more expensive versions of the other coupes.

Seems to say the Rocco is best at everything except power, but then gives the win to the GTC. Wonder what the result would have been with the 160 tsi.

Well I wouldn't ride any of the other two into battle... The Scirocco is pure class the others are just... Well souped up shopping trolleys.

Scirocco owners on a Scirocco forum prefer the Scirocco over the Veloster and GTC - couldn't have predicyed that one :-)

I've now seen a few GYCs and I really like them from the outside, not keen on the VX interior though.

Veloster is an interesting concept with only having one rear door like the Mini, however at least they got it on the right side, unlike the Mini. I think quite a few manufacturers may follow this trend.

As I always say, buy what makes you happy and respect other peoples decisions which may not agree with yours.

at a pistonheads meet there was a veloster and it looked awful from every angle, also can't believe how big the GTC is in the flesh, for me if i was in the market for a coupe Megane RS with cup chasis all day long if i wasn't a VAG fanboy
