What engine?

Hi everyone.

I'm currently in the process of choosing what Scirocco I want. I know I want a Candy White one, and it has to be used as I cannot afford it new. For the tax and insurance that I can afford I'm looking at getting either a 1.4 TSI 122 bhp, a 1.4 TSI 160bhp or the 2.0 TDI 140bhp.

I've driven the 1.4 TSI 160 and the 2.0 TDI And to be honest both felt fantastic. I'm driving the 122 on Monday. I think generally it seemed the 1.4 felt a little nippier when accelerating from being stationary? But I was wondering what other people thought or would reccomend? I'm not overly fussed about the top speed as you can't legally do anymore than 70mph here anyway. I'm more interested in a fun nippy car thats quick in acceleration and looks gorgeous like all of the Sciroccos do! I gues sthe main question here is is it better to have a bigger engine but less horse power ie: the 2.0 TDI or am I better going for a smaller engine but with more horse power ie: 1.4 TSI 160? Or is the 1.4 TSI 122 bhp just as sufficient as the other two?

Hello,

The reason the 160PS is nippy is because the Supercharger works as soon as the engine starts to rev from Idle. You won't find that on the 122PS. Although the 122PS is not far behind, just it uses the Turbo Boost only so takes time to build up max.turbo boost further up the rpm. The 160PS boost goes to max by 1,500 rpm and stays there all the way to 6,000 rpm.

Diesel 140PS, same as the 122PS, boost takes time so like a 122PS but more torque and power.

If its "I'm more interested in a fun nippy car thats quick in acceleration and looks gorgeous like all of the Sciroccos do!", then the 160PS is a better bet.

I get the 122PS effect every morning in the 160PS cos the 160's Supercharger is shut off for the first minute at cold start. So it operates as a 122PS power level. The 160PS is still nippy without the supercharging, but it doesn't quite have that real nippy feeling until the charger is activated.

I drove the Diesel 140PS back to back to the TSi 160PS when making my purchase. Need I say more ------------------>
That doesn't mean to say the Diesel was poor, just a different drive I wasn't looking for. (But, until 3 weeks previous it was going to be an Audi A3 2.0 ltr DSG. lol)

Yeah I think I get the feeling the 160 might be the one for me. But I guess I'll see how the drive goes in the 122 on Monday. The insurance is 100 pounds cheaper on the 122 and tax 40 pounds cheaper which is a bonus, but equally I think it could be worth paying that bit extra for the extra fun.

Sadly the insurance starts getting a little high for me when I'm entering the 2.0 TSI territory. So I have to keep it to one of these three.

My other concearn is general running costs. Is the 1.4 160 likely to cost me significantly more on servicing or repairs and parts than the 122? Or won't I notice a massive difference?

Nope.

Urban I get about 32 - 34 mpg, 42mpg on a A road / Motorway trip and overall its currently 35mpg for me since new.
Thats no different against my 1.8 injection previously but power up from 82Kw to 118Kw.

160PS & 122PS are the same servicing regime.

Servicing:
1st was £102,
2nd year £120 but I did some of it myself so call it £150.
And expecting 3rd year to be in the region of £225 because of Brake fluid and will be doing the Air-Con although it is not a service item.

Fault Repairs..... = warranty surely
Accident Repairs .... all the same bodywork, so no difference. - Accident Insurance claims etc.....

I have the 140 diesel and I love it think its a cracking little car, pulls well, cheap insurance, £30 tax and i've had it 6 months and ive averaged 54mpg over that time and I do boot it now and then.

I have not driven any of the other variants but the 160 is the best I have ever driven and that's saying a lot when you see the kind of cars I've driven over the years. Ive read somewhere that the ACC is more noticeable on a 2.0 GT. But as I haven't driven one of these i can say you can certainly feel the difference when you use the ACC in the 160. Not sure if the ACC is an optional extra in a 122 or its now standard?

RW1 thanks very much that's really useful to know then and another thumbs up for the 160hp!

sparki Yeah I had a test drive of the Diesel and it felt really nice to drive. I think the plus side to that is you come across the diesels which have the leather seats/bigger alloys/blacked out rear windows more than I'm finding in the 1.4 used market. I'm finding they seem to be mostly bog standard fitted cars so I'd be lucky to find one with any extras it seems.

phild I think you may be right about the ACC being an optional extra on the 122, based off a different post I read. But I could be wrong. I'm pleased to hear that the 160 is such a nice drive though. EEEP I just want one now. >_<

Found the car of my dreams recently. 1.4 160 bhp Candy White. Sunroof, 18" Interlagos, Spoiler and tinted rear windows.....23k miles 2010 car but it was a few grand out of my price range. I'd been following it a couple of months hoping that no one would buy it so I could save the rest up....but alas yesterday it dissapeared.

I really hope another one of similar specs comes along! I adore the sunroof and the 18" wheels but I get the feeling I'll be extremely lucky to find one in that model that's used. Keeps fingers crossed*

Should be more and more choice from now on as there are lots 3 yrs and older now when most leased/financed cars get changed.

But keep your eyes peeled.. the right one will come along

and when you do get it, it will make the wait well worth it.

Ugh now I'm starting to consider the 2.0 TSI. They seem to be similar in price, if not less, than the 1.4's. The Tax on one seems to be 215 pounds, where as the 1.4 is 170 pounds. Insurance isn't really coming up as being massively different, 50-100 quid difference if any, but if the car was cheaper to buy in the first place that wouldn't bother me. I'm just wondering if I'm going to notice a huge difference in the MPG I get out of the two cars. With my current little Clio I think, having read up on some random site, that does about 35ish. So I don't ever really put more than 25 quid in it a week, if that. Do you think I'll regret getting the 2.0? Is it going to cost me a tonne of petrol a week?

My 2.0TSi costs £210 to tax and £252 to insure fully comp inc legal, protected no claims etc with a 10k mile limit, but I am 56 with a spotless record which might account for that. MPG hovers around 35-40 unless I open the taps in which case it plummets to mid 20's, but that's only to be expected. I tested most of the range and settled on the 2.0TSi but it's all down to personal choice in the end.

There are other considerations too, such as tyres. I've been used to completely fitting out all four wheels on my Astra for £400, whereas it cost me £344 yesterday for a pair of 235/40ZR18 P Zero Rosso's, which I'm told will only last me between 16~18 thousand miles, depending how I drive. I was getting 35K miles out of my Astra tyres. So I'm going to be paying, on average, at least £600 a year on tyres, whereas the Astra used to cost me around £200 a year, if that.

But this is the choice we make when we buy our "nice" cars

Voyager that's really good to know thanks! I mean if I can get close to the MPG my rust bucket does now then that would be brill....and it sounds like I'll get getting more with either car, unless I put my foot down.

Andy I really love the Interlagos wheels so if I went for the 1.4 I'd be getting them anyway. I'm guessing that means I'd need the same tyres as I'd get on the 2,0 anyway then?

I was thinking more of the difference between your Clio and the Scirocco, unless you have a high end Clio anyway?

Nope....it's a big step up from my 14 year old 1.2 Clio

but I've been saving for a lovely car for quite some time so it's a real treat. But I'm set on the fact I'm getting a Rocco, Candy White, Interlagos. I was 100% certain it was going to be the 1.4tsi 160, but upon looking I've noticed there doesn't seem to be a huge difference between them based upon sale purchase price (Used) tax and insurance, so it's making me re-consider. I'll be delighted with whatever I get but I'm just weighing up the options because obviously if a 2.0 comes along that's the right one before the 1.4 comes along, I'm wondering if I should go for it or hold out for the 1.4. Just getting everything straight in my head so when the right car comes along I don't have to hang about looking into stuff like this and risk it going before I get back to it.

Haha yeah Diesel was also an option but to be honest I don't do much driving. I average about 7-8k miles a year absolute max, so I was told a Petrol may be a better option for me, what do you think? Bah! If only I could just get one of everything.

If you say 8k miles I reckon there would be an approx saving in fuel of £500pa (based on very quick calcs and a 15mpg difference between petrol & diesel). Road tax is £120 pa for the manal £135 for DSG.

I guess it all depends on whether dealers are charging a premium for diesel models. I've not compared the used prices lately.
