R Exhaust Finish
Can any R owners confirm the finish on the inside of the exhaust trims? Odd question i know.
Cleaning the chrome outer surface today i noticed the inside surfaces looking terrible, rough surface with what appeared to be scratches in the finish. Can only assume it was from a previous cleaning attempt.
Starting cleaning them and soon realised that the inside appears to be painted black and the cleaning process was removing the damaged paint.
Had a look on the net and the pictures do appear to suggest the inner is painted matt black.
What i have been left with is a chrome finish on the outside of the pipes and a bare metal finish on the inside where i expect it was painted originally. It actually looks ok at the moment, not sure how it will fare over time.
Can anyone confirm whether the trims are indeed painted on the inside? May look at getting some replacements.
It was a bit dark when i took the photo.

Re: R Exhaust Finish
the outside chrome and the inside is bare steel i think its soot that makes it black but it will polish if you have the patients

I assume you are aware of the fact that you have to clean the exhaust wearing gloves and mask...Exhaust gas residues are extremely harmful....

I find it easier to clean the exhaust with the engine 'OFF'Tsakonas wrote:I assume you are aware of the fact that you have to clean the exhaust wearing gloves and mask...Exhaust gas residues are extremely harmful....

Re: R Exhaust Finish
As above the inside was just like a rolled stainless finish on mine, i have let the internal part go black (as its to rough to get properly polished) and just do the outside.sciroccorocket wrote:the outside chrome and the inside is bare steel i think its soot that makes it black but it will polish if you have the patients

Re: R Exhaust Finish
Thanks for all the comments, the uniform and tough nature of the "black" made me think it was painted. Managed to get a decent finish inside and out with wire wool and elbow grease. Unfortunately my right foot is busy undoing all my good work. :-)

Appreciate the sensible advice, totally agree but I never practice what I preach unfortunately. Must invest in some gloves for car cleaning!Tsakonas wrote:I assume you are aware of the fact that you have to clean the exhaust wearing gloves and mask...Exhaust gas residues are extremely harmful....

Re: R Exhaust Finish
Wire wool on a chrome tip? personally I wouldn't as its way to easy to break through the thin electro plated chrome to the steel underneath.
You need to try Autosol and a microfibre cloth, if they're really sooty leave it to soak then rub and rinse the wax off afterwards.

Re: R Exhaust Finish
I've been using OOO grade steel wool (like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Faithfull-ASW1O ... B000C752EK) on the tail pipes of my GT for the last three years with no ill effect. Have found it very effective.
Have to confess I've never had a car with such mucky pipes!

Hope is what you have when you don't have control!

Re: R Exhaust Finish
Wire wool and megs metal polish seems to be working well. None of the others shifted the initial grime. Suggest maintaining now could be achieved with polish and microfibre.Dobbin wrote:I've been using OOO grade steel wool (like this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Faithfull-ASW1O ...
