Front tyres

Post by faigy90 »

I got my Scirocco, approved used with 9.5k on the clock. It has now done 15k and needs a new set of front tyres.

Im wondering if the tracking is not correct or the previous owner drove it like a t*t!

Would you say this is normal wear on Continental sport contacts?!!

Cheers.

As above, are they just worn all over or is the wear on inside/ outside only

My first set of fronts were Bridgestone Potenza RE050As, and they only managed 8900 miles! I have Conti SportContacts on now which must have done about 11,000 and are still just about OK.

The wear looks ok to me. I have had a search around on here and 15k is not abnormal it seems. Was expecting more, perhaps the person who had the car first had a more aggresive driving style than me!

About 12.5k for me so doesn't seem unreasonable.

When I put my Rocco in for it's first service (10k miles) a couple of weeks ago the guy on the service desk asked me if I had already changed the front tyres as they were measuring 7mm tread and he couldn't believe they were still the originals.

I explained to him most of my miles are on the motorway and I'm a smooth driver :-)

My Conti SportContact 2's don't look half bad after 17500kms, still plenty of tread and equal wearing across the tyre - smooth driving style with the odd burst of madness... :p

Just had our 2nd service (20,000 miles) and they say 3-4mm tread left on the fronts, probably worth a change? They are quoting £450 - seems steep but I know nothing about tyre costs. Worth shopping around or just go for it?

For 18's off the internet you can get decent brand tyres for about £120 each then prob about £20 - £30 for a local tyre place to fit them. Garage price seems a bit high to me!

Anyone got the Pirelli self sealing types rather than the Contis ? Just wondering if these were as good on wear as the Contis seem to be ?

Got the Pirelli Self Sealing tyres as they were the ones supplied when I got the car back in July 2010. Had my first service at 17,000 miles and they still had 6mm tread. Done 20,000 miles and still look fine. I do mostly motorway driving.

Quite impressive, mine are on their wear markers at 15k...

29k on mine with original Pirelli all round still. Will have to think about changing the fronts soon though.

Never got more than 6k miles with the Dunlops on the last Roc before the fronts needed replacing - sidewall bulges from very minor potholes, no effect at all on my tracking - those Dunlops seem especially delicate, never got the chance to wear them out.
