Anyone DIY retrofitted rear parking sensors???

Wife is picking up a nearly new Rocco this week, the only thing missing are parking sensors....

I can obtain the VW kit (1K0054630B) colour coded for £150. Just wondering what is involved with the fitting. Most worried about drilling the bumper, are there marks on the rear side of the bumper. And what is the best drill bit to use????

Watching this with interest as I'm planning on the same mod. Would be handy to see some pics of where the bumper fixings are, any special removal tools/tricks and the best order to remove them. And if there are helpful markings on the inside of the bumper.

But I'm very tempted to fit a £20 kit that a mate has just fitted to his Passat. The sensors come in a nice gloss black that should look close enough to the deep black colour of my car. They even come with a drill bit that is exactly the right size so no extra tools required. The buzzer is also included.

Does the VW kit come with a drill or a loom that links to the CAN bus so no need to run looms to the front of the car? Does it use the car audio system to provide the beeps so no external buzzer to hide?

i bought a set of ebay finished in gloss white for 16 delivered,retro ones pretty much the same comes with the drill bit,i just checked on the vw brochure to see where vw mount the oem ones and fitted in same area.two wires one to earth 2nd too reverse light + ,the rest of wires fit in appriopriate locations as per instruction ,took about 1.30hours,just be very steady drilling ,nice and easy ,mask the area if needed in case the drill bit slips ,but very easy to fit,not a oem but for 16 a bargain ,no probs 9 month on

I had a mate who has his own VAG specialist garage colour code and fit a set of steelmate sensors, think all in cost around £150 from memory. Been on 6 months no probs. Can take a photo of the bumper if want to see where to fit. They dont sit as flush as oem but still look very neat (dont stick out like a sore thumb).

Lad who fitted them said seemed very good quality, some of the cheaper sets off ebay etc can go faulty in heavy rain, frost etc. Maybe look on which? as sme of the sets I considered like Valeo etc came out terrible in the tests for not picking up obstacles like bikes led on floor etc. Pedestrians tend to scream so they arnt such an issue

I'm thinking of fitting the invisible ones, its a strip that fits to the inside of the rear bumper, and then hooks up to the reversing lights

i think its a better solution than drilling the bumper!!!

The only thing that is immediately obvious....

Ultrasonics as original fit will detect human beings, animals (pets) and plastic objects like road cones/plastic barriers.

As that system appears to use the same technology as treasure hunting devices (Electromagnetic Sensor), it will only work if the object immediately behind the vehicle is made of a metal material which disturbs its electrical field.

And if its like the Scirocco at the front with a deep polystyrene filler block, will it beep OK and still some distance to go, when in fact you are about to nudge the car behind because the metal work is further inside the car behind you.

My Scirocco R came without parking sensors and I did not like the VW aftermarket kit available so I decided to fit original parts to allow the RNS510 display to work.

The dealer was neither interested in doing the job or even looking up the parts and hinted that bits would be £700 without labour. The key to a reasonable cost is the sensors - so an eBay search started - and I have done it for £250
I also managed to pick up a full wiring loom which gave me the connectors and the twisted pair of canbus wires plus I could see how and where to connect to. There are only three external connections needed and these are common points that I suspect are easy access assembly points at the factory before the dash is fitted but impossible to find later.

How to do it
Remove the side & rear trim in the boot.
Mount the buzzer & control unit in the rear right hand corner of the boot (clips into existing holes).

• Connect a Red Yellow wire to the PDC unit from the A199 common connector which is a Black / Violet wiring loop that comes from fuse 2 & feeds the light switch, ABS, dash control unit etc.
• Connect the Orange / Brown to the data bus low B390 common loop and the Orange / Black to the data bus High B383 common loop (run the paired wires up to the dash or across the boot to the rear damping unit)


• The Brown - earth goes to a local ground point.
• Push the side light wires out from the old 2 pin connector and feed them into the new 8 pin connector with smaller pins.
• The new 8 pin bumper connector needs the 6 remaining wires connecting to the parking control unit, four blue sensor wires plus the red / yellow supply & Brown / yellow return wires.


Remove the bumper cover & drill the new holes. The sensor brackets come with adhesive pads, stick these in place and clip the new wiring in.

Refit the bumper

Yes all blind bumpers have mould marks for parking sensors

All I can say is I could
The car was made without parking sensors and I just used VCDS to tell the original head that it now has parking sensors

OldPOP do you have any photos or details about the actual bumper removal, Im about to embark in the Parking dynamics route of the behind the bumper sensor and i have had a quick look and the bumper is quite well sealed underneath so it will have to come off to install the sensor so a little pointer in the right direction would be helpful. I've just fitted some eBay specials (£9.16 delivered). They're not a perfect match for Candy White, but near enough.

Removing and replacing the rear bumper was quite tricky, especially the push-pins at the ends. Otherwise it was just removing the rear lights to get at the 4 top screws (T25), removing 3 screws in each wheel arch and 4 screws underneath, then wiggling it free. Remember to disconnect the number-plate light connector on the right-hand side.

Once the bumper is removed, the sensor fitting positions are clearly marked on the back. I drilled small pilot holes from the back. The kit included a suitable drill which worked well (drilling from the good side of the bumper to avoid chips).

I tied in the cables from the 4 sensors and fed them up through the right-hand vent flap, then loosely replaced the bumper.

In order to get at the wiring, I removed the right-hand quarter panel. There are 3 screws (T20), one hidden under the coat hook which is levered up to release. Disconnect the boot light and power socket.

I couldn't find any information about which wire to pick up for the reversing lights, so I had to trace it. It's the blue/black one in the right rear light cable loom. This should be connected to the positive for the parking sensor control box. The negative should be connected to ground; I used one of the bolts under the quarter panel by loosening the nut and sliding the wire under it. Using the sticky pad supplied, I attached the sounder to the metal under the quarter panel near the rear screws. I put the control box in a Jiffy bag and tucked it into the space below the rear light access cover.

Make sure that the rear lights are reconnected before testing the sensors. If all is well, refit all the screws and push-pins in the bumper.

Firstly I'd like to say many thanks to OldPOP for his guide.

I'm looking to do this over the weekend. I've got all the parts tools etc together but am struggling with PCD control unit pins. Elsawin shows the canbus wires connecting to pins 9 and 10 on the 16 pin connector, but it also shows that the buzzer is connected to pins 2 and 10 on the 16 pin connector.

Can anyone shed any light on this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sorry but I have not quite clear.

I have the following cables.


orange / black: must go to the can bus gateway. this wire which is connected to pin?
orange / brown: must go to the can bus gateway. this wire which is connected to pin?
purple / black: must go to the fuse box? it has to be sized fuse (.. A?)?
Brown: ground, I have no problems with this.
