Im guessing a CON?

Post by maxreaction »

I'm currently in the process of selling my Scirocco. Its on Autotrader, and as a classified Ad on eBay...

I've had e-mail contact with one potential buyer asking about the car, and one message replied as the following...

"Thanks for the response,i am so much interested in purchasing the car and am very okay with your price, but i will not be able to come and inspect it because I'm not in town presently,i would love to know it's present condition and the reason you are selling it.I will arrange for the pick up and delivery through my private shipping agent,so kindly get back to me with your PayPal account email address so that i can proceed with the payment as soon as possible.

Thanks and hope to read from you soon.

Regards,
Mercy"

Now, I don't know about you but I wouldn't buy a car with out seeing it, what ever the car as £1 - £1,000,000. I guessing that this is an attempt at a con, but not sure how this would benefit the 'buyer' in a con like this. Obviously I wouldn't let the car go until payment was cleared and in my account, So is paypal reversable in some way? Or can buyers get infomation from paypal to then screw you over that way?

a little advice would be appreciated, I'm just trying to get my head round why people do this sort of thing, and what they can gain from it?

Thanks in advance

Will

Great read, thanks Shaun. I wonder if any one as actually been stung with this.

After reading more, in to this is seems that they seem to be trying to collect the money that you then forward to the 'shipping agent' then cancelling there entire transaction through there credit card, and your then out £600 or so that youve forwarded on there behalf! SCAM = SCUM

Yep that's the basis of the scam. Had some similar contacts when selling mine. The bad English is a give away followed by some bullshit story. I typed the email address into google and found it was linked to some scam emails. If someone is serious they will at least phone you, just be careful. Read the selling tips on Autotrader.
08/11 - 12/13 2.0 TSI R DSG, Black / Black Vienna
01/09 - 08/11 2.0 TSI GT DSG, Black / Truffle Vienna

Black is the new Black....

Got scam written all over it.

Either they would give you a duff cheque or they pay more than it's worth and ask you to cash it and pay back the extra then you find after the cheque is a dud and you've paid them for it and lost a car.

I heard that the Government had set up a quango to investigate scam emails generally, especially the ones from banks where "your account has been blocked, follow this link.... (and give us your account details and PIN).... so we can unlock it again." The aim is to try and trace the sender and shut them down. We're all asked to forward dodgy emails to the following email address

email@actionfraud.org.uk

Usually, you get an automatic email acknowledgement. On Mondays though, I seem to receive a server response along the lines of "Sorry, we've bounced your message because the recipient's Inbox is full (!)

If you decide to forward the email to them, I guess there is a chance they might nail someone.......
